Gotta be there at 8am, and the surgery start time is 11:15AM. It'll be done at the Indianapolis VA Hospital.
I'm really hoping this is the final step (so to speak) toward me getting out of my wheelchair and back on my feet. The therapy will be brutal, and ongoing. I have no strength in my legs and will have to work hard and long to get it back.

(1,328 posts)that the surgery is successful and you regain the use of your legs.

(14,946 posts)Spent Sat in urgent care for xrays on knee, then on to ER for ultrasound on knee. Stabbing pain in back of knee, hoping to see an osteo soon. Hoping surgery is not in my immediate future as pain is in back of knee and knee itself seems fine. No torn meniscus as I had thought. But if it is a choice between surgery/knee replacement or constant nagging pain I will happily choose surgery.
Physical therapy will build you right back up!

(34,137 posts)Are they sending you to a rehab hospital after the operation? That would help a lot with getting you back on your feet. A Medicare approved rehab hospital has a stringent requirement for physical (2 hours per day) and occupational (1 hour per day) therapy. While many people get their physical therapy at home, that is not as rigorous as you can get in rehab and is generally not every day. One friend of mine only got her PT three times a week for two weeks then once a week for a month.
If you have not made arrangements for rehab, talk to the patient advocate (or whatever they call them there) while you are in recovery from surgery. They can help push it through.
Good Luck and I will be sending good vibes on Monday!

(34,582 posts)A year and a half ago my wife had hers done. One week into rehab, she was asleep too close to the edge of the bed, her leg fell off the bed, and she damaged her quad muscle. That totally ruined rehab. Her leg got worse and worse, to where she could barely bend it. They had to open her back up January and clean out a LOT of scar material. She is better now, and can get to 104 degrees of bend, but the doc thinks she should be able to get more. On the 30th they are going to sedate her and manually manipulate the leg to break up any scar material that has formed. She took her therapy very seriously, but with all her health problems she is at the limit to what she can do herself. Her quad had really weakened, and she has had to get that strength back. Good luck to you.

(28,125 posts)I'm considering replacement myself. I'm still mobile but in some pain from a torn meniscus and arthritis, so I'm more than curious.
