(56,848 posts)and they're pretty sure it's a cliffhanger, but if you go to the last several seconds of it and enhance the sound, you can supposedly hear... (swipe to the right) Glenn calling out "Maggie" as he gets gets clubbed.
Now, if it's really a cliffhanger at the end, it could be another fakeout like the dumpster bit where the person in the spoiler text seemingly is the one, but it's really somebody else.
Baitball Blogger
(52,344 posts)They removed the video, but they kept the transcript. However, the word, "maggie" was not included in the transcript. In fact, it sounded like they had focused on Carl.
If they do pick Glenn I think he's a goner. Unless they want to turn him into a legend on WD. That first blow looks like it would have been fatal. Of course, I understand that Negan wants to make a strong visual point so there will be more to follow.
Now I understand why Maggie's pregnancy is at risk.

(96,942 posts)I'm inclined to think it was Glenn that died but only because of the comics and a season that centered a lot around Glenn even when he wasn't the actual hub of action.
It really could have been anyone, aside from Rick and Carl.
Tara, losing Denise and Glenn, would be devastated and maybe not bent on revenge. She realized her error with the governor when she saw everyone she cared about destroyed, but it was Hershel's death, a stranger to her, that caused her the most pain. I think she saw what revenge can do.
Still, she might want a taste.

(96,942 posts)even though the hints all seemed to point at Glenn all through the season (all the close calls, the photos, his drawing attention to himself), maybe that was misdirection.
Maybe.
I know it wasn't Carl or Rick but it could have been anyone else.
Negan said to feed Carl's eye to Rick if they try anything, so that sounds like neither of them got it.
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)Glenn, Daryl or Abraham.
Solly Mack
(96,942 posts)Didn't Gimple say on the Talking dead a few minutes ago that it was someone well loved by the fans?
He was talking and I'm not sure even he realized what he said, but his word choice is telling - someone well loved. (killed by Negan)
So, someone well loved died.
It could be Daryl, but I'm thinking it was Glenn still.
But maybe not.
Daryl and Glenn are both well loved with strong fan bases. Carol, but she wasn't there.
Solly Mack
(96,942 posts)She may as well put a bullet in her head, because I'm not sure there will be any coming back for her if it is Abraham.
Unless she will go on to fall for the leader of the Kingdom, instead of it being Michonne - since Michonne is Andrea, so to speak.
I think I keep thinking it is Glenn because of the comics. He's already dead.
But then so is Carol, so...
suffragette
(12,232 posts)Glenn - all the close escapes this season as precursor to no escape.
Daryl - if anything could shake Carol out of her state it would be Daryl's death.
Someone in between Rick and Carl. I think Sasha or Aaron were the ones between them. That would add more meaning to why Negan gave the extra warning to Rick and Carl. If it's Sasha, then could also bring Abraham back to Rosita. Already sounds like Spencer is being set to collaborate with Saviors and that could be another push away for him from Rick's group to the new one.
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)would have the big emotional impact of losing Glenn or Daryl.
suffragette
(12,232 posts)though I really like Aaron's character.
Main reason I added Sasha or Aaron is because of them being physically located between Rick and Carl and because of Negan's additional statement to them about not interfering.
Solly Mack
(96,942 posts)It could be Daryl but I'm thinking not. Unless when they moved Glenn they moved him next to Carl. I couldn't really tell how they all ended up.
Who knows? The writers are up to something and we'll know soon enough.
I just hope it makes sense. I can stand losing a main character if the death is essential to the story - even if only to show how precarious life is and how no one is safe.
suffragette
(12,232 posts)I hadn't thought about the movement going on.
Yes, sadly Glenn makes the most sense, with Daryl a secondary possibility.
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)and the producers flipped back and forth between each person and Lucille, and didn't necessarily go in order of left to right or right to left.
Solly Mack

When I called them they'd say they'd turned it off OR that they couldn't find our account, yet we'd get another charge the next month. We finally had to get our credit card company to intervene. Sling never responded to them, so the credit card company refunded us. But Sling is SLIMY when it comes to customer service.
If you ever decide not to use them anymore, you may have to jump through hoops to keep from being charged.

(56,848 posts)that was a great season opener . maybe they have Carol, Morgan and the people they found ride in on horseback and save the day - the cavalry has come?

(5,830 posts)I cannot envison Carol coming to their rescue!
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)but, it's certain that somebody got killed. Even if Carol and Morgan came riding to the rescue, it's already to late for that person.

(5,830 posts)Glen who was at the left side. I am so sorry for Maggie. I love the show but man, this is killing me to think that those folks will eventually (Megan and his co horts) will invade Alexandria! Am thinking that Carol and the other guy will help to save them. I was on pins and needles when I saw what they eventually encountered. The best of the best are now held hostage.

(56,848 posts)It's a lot harder to do cliffhangers in the days of the internet and everybody having a smartphone - people will know who lives and who dies soon after they start filming Season 7. So, they've basically wrecked an iconic scene from the comics for a cheap trick.

(52,344 posts)They said that the person they kill sets up events that follow. Unfortunately, it would have to take a sacrifice from the old gang to really add up to an emotional investment in the audience to get Negan.

That said, the show gave Dale's "tainted meat" death to Bob; they gave Tyreese's execution death by the Governor using Michonne's katana to Hershel; Carol is long dead in the comics and Sophia is still alive; Andrea is alive in the comics; Denise got the crossbow through the eye that Abraham got in the comics. There is no Daryl and no Sasha in the comics, either. (In the comics, Tyreese had a daughter who hanged herself back at Hershel's farm)
However, since Scott Gimple knows this, it would be a switch to give Glenn the same death on the show as he got in the comics.

(56,848 posts)Is changing things up like Glenn's death following what happened in the comics being wily? Or, is it pulling the rug out from underneath fans and a cheap gimmick?
Ohio Joe
(21,898 posts)They will not show the death in the first episode... That will show how Daryl, Glenn and Michonne got to the gathering and it will get Morgan and Carol there as well... They won't show who got killed until episode two or maybe even three.Gimple really needs to go if this show is to be saved.

(7,947 posts)Getting everyone out of Alexandria. They kill off the one doctor, and then Daryl goes after the killers blindly, then a bunch of the group follows him blindly, then Maggie gets into medical trouble, sending everyone else off.
I get the big finale with Negan, and the group in peril, but the writers just sort of got everyone to that point to get them to that point. Then Carol wandering off by herself.
I'm not a writer, I've never been in a writer's room, but sometimes it seems like they forget they have only X amount of episodes per season on some of these shows. Cram a bunch of stuff in, and then oh yeah, we have to get everyone into that lineup. We'll just make people do some crazy things to get them there.
That's the nature of TV though I guess. Even the best shows have it happen. It's not a 1.5 hour movie. It's not a book. It's an ongoing show with actual people, who sometimes want to leave the show, or have contract issues, or whatever. It's difficult to get it right in TV. There's a next season, or many more season, or you don't know how many, it's jobs, it's money, so you can't do everything right away, but you have to keep coming up with ideas, so you have to stretch the time, but you don't want to linger, etc.
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)the showrunners and writers are not always good at making the show have a flow to the action and the events.
When the Wolves attacked Alexandria, some people died, but Carol, Aaron, Rosita and Tara basically fended off and killed almost all of them by themselves. Especially Carol.
rather than some huge elaborate and awkward setup where everybody loses their heads and leaves Alexandria, they could have done it like they did in the comics - the Saviors conducted a multi-pronged military style attack on Alexandria and overwhelmed the entire town quickly. Rick and company had been so used to being attack straight on that they weren't prepared for being attacked straight on, while also being hit from the flanks as well, and by a lot of trained warriors.
Having everybody trickle out of town and conduct all those elaborate mini-scenarios with the RV and with Daryl/Rosita/Michonne/Glenn was really forced.
The2ndWheel
(7,947 posts)but that does sound like a more efficient way of doing things. Makes more sense too, considering how much they were building up the defenses of Alexandria in the show.
It's funny how one moment can make or break something. Lots of complaints about the cliffhanger out there. If they had just showed who it was, nobody would really be pissed off. All the other details would be overlooked. Mess up that one thing though, and then you can see something wrong over here, and over there, and under that, etc. It should be interesting to see how they write themselves out of it, because the way they ended the season seems to hurt people more than who was killed. That can be dangerous territory.

(2,242 posts)If the Saviors have the people, machinery, and firepower that they appear to, and Negan is as bad-ass as we're supposed to believe, why wouldn't they kill all of them. They have a perfect opportunity to take out all of the leadership at Alexandria and a good portion of its muscle. They can't think that whatever arrangement they have in mind going forward is actually going to work. Take that with a grain of salt...I haven't read the comics.
As far as who died at the end of the episode, I think it's Glenn or Daryl. And I don't think a cliffhanger was the original intent. I've read stories that Reedus might be ready to leave the show. I think they're trying to lock him down. If they can, Glenn dies. If not, it'll be Daryl.
That's my .02

let's say The Saviors go back to Alexandria and confiscate all of the weapons there, will the Hilltop and Alexandria be able to fight against the Saviors, armed with assault rifles and other automatic weapons?

I learned today that in the comic series, the 3 groups band together under Rick's leadership to fight back against the Saviors.

(1,681 posts)As Jeff pointed out the Saviors don't produce, raise crops or create anything. They sustain themselves by taking half of what other groups produce. They need others to do the real work for them.
As to killing the leaders, if you do that then it will fall to the Saviors to lead all these various groups themselves. The groups would be quite problematic & openly hostile having to take orders directly from new conquers. It's far easier to convince the leaders of these groups to keep doing what they're doing but give half to the Saviors. Keeping the leaders acts as a buffer between the group & the Saviors.
That's why they only kill one from Rick's group. To set an example, but they need workers.
As for the guns, it might make sense to take the guns. However, in order not to allow hurt feelings to fester, they might let them keep a few weapons but not enough to stage a revolt against the new overseers. Remember, Maggie had the group hide a bunch of weapons back at Alexandria in case of another Wolf attack? This will come back to bite the Saviors later.
As for who died?
- Daryl is immensely popular and sells a metric ton of merchandise for AMC. He also has a new AMC show coming out just for him. He's cash-money $afe.
- Carl & Rick are safe from Negan's comment before the killing.
- Maggie had a big scene where she got her hair-cut to look just like her comic book counter-part. That's a lot of specific build-up just to kill her? Naaah, she is safe.
- Eugene hasn't even started cranking out bullets or done the other things that come after the war. He am smart & safe.
- Michone? See above for Daryl. She's practically immortal in TWD.
- Abraham, Glenn, Aaron, Rosita have all been killed in the comics & are therefore wildcards here.
- Sasha is not in the comics. Negan likes girls so I don't see him having Lucille kiss her.
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)Negan has a "harem" of women in the comics that were all somebody else's wife or girlfriend, and I would not be surprised if Abraham goes down fighting if Negan tries to make Sasha a new "wife" of his.
That said, I am leaning to Glenn, though I still think Daryl is possible. I think the Abe loss would be afterwards.
GOLGO 13
(1,681 posts)Negan's "wives" are all volunteer. As long as they agree to be his "wives" they don't have to work in order to eat/protection/etc. However, they must remain faithful to him or the consequences are quite "ugly" indeed.

simple, really
NewJeffCT
(56,848 posts)but, as I saw on another website, the Saviors aren't really the governing types - they leave Gregory in place at Hilltop to keep things running smoothly. They cowed him into submission by killing a young man from Hilltop. The same with Alexandria - they kill somebody close to Rick and cow him into submission, and hopefully everything runs smoothly there.

(1,681 posts)He doesnt see Rick as a threat. Rick is just somebody that he has to convince/dominate to keep the goods flowing his way.
Negan is quite charismatic at getting people to see things his way. Look at the size of his group, as an example. You can tell he's done this "performance" before quite succesfully. However, Rick is absolutely something that he has never encountered ever before.
It will be a combination of Negan's hubris, Rick's iron-willed indomintability to win & inspire his people to annihilate themselves before any foe that will win the day.
