(135,425 posts)If she's not of native heritage (and I don't think she is), that sounds pretty racist to me! I don't think I've heard a single thing she's put out!
Here's the worst bit--she's apparently British, and was pretty "big" at a time when I was LIVING in UK. If I've never heard of her despite being plonked down smack dab in the middle of her stomping grounds, I don't think she qualifies as "iconic." Putting her in the same category as Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Anne Frank? I don't think so!
Fun quiz, though--thanks for bringing it to us! Fair warning to anyone taking it--some of the pictures are tricky (one pop icon is unrecognizable now from her more youthful and innocent days) --look twice, vote once!
Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Harry, Grace Jones all became famous in the late-70s / early-80s as much for their unique look as for their music. Sioxie Sioux fits well into that sub-genre of iconic women.
IcyPeas
(21,859 posts)were on Top of the Pops about 20 times in the late 70s and 80s. I don't know how you could have missed that if you were living there. I guess you weren't into punk music. (she was the first female to front a punk band) She was known for her punk style and attitude and has worn a swastika (which she got beat up for) and Star of David (not together). Punks did stuff like that to be outrageous - to be rebellious. In their beginning they did a 20 minute version of The Lord's Prayer. They formed shortly after the Sex Pistols. It's a genre of music not everyone cares for. Punk was very popular in Britain - not so much in the USA.
Anyway, there's tons of information if you wanted to find out. Wikipedia..... they have influenced many bands. I have seen them in concert half a dozen or so times - so I am a bit biased.
MADem
(135,425 posts)And I have a very cold opinion of anyone who would wear a swastika as a fashion statement, too.
I am usually open to most genres, but (and please, punk fans, don't berate me for my tastes, it won't change them) I really find punk music to be, well, shit. It comes off as lazy, unsophisticated, loud, and just AWFUL to my ear. Cats having sexual congress is more melodious and complex, IMO!
Now, those who like that stuff, more power to them--look at it this way, I'm not competing for those seats they want at that concert!
