To me, it's pretty much the same as bare feet. Other than at the beach or in the shower, where else would you go without shoes? We were once in a line in New York City (waiting to see David Letterman, actually ) near what I assume was a mom with a couple of young teen-aged girls. One of them was wearing flip flops and she tripped and one of the flip flops broke. So this kid was actually going barefoot on the streets of New York City... Obviously, that bothered me enough to stick in my mind.
