Earl Scruggs & Steve Martin

“Earl Scruggs was my inspiration,” said Steve Martin, the actor and comedian, who started playing banjo as a teenager and recorded a Grammy Award-winning song with him in 2001.

Earl's teaching them to play the five-string.

None of us banjo pickers would know what to do with that odd instrument if it weren't for Earl.

episodes of the Flatt & Scruggs show available for viewing. Also several episodes of Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest, featuring Johnny Cash, Doc Watson, and the Stanley Brothers are available.

I am hoping to see Bela Fleck & The Flecktones in a few weeks and I imagine he will be doing a tribute to Mr. Scruggs.

Earl Scruggs was an original and an innovator as much as any of the pop stars we praise so often. I think maybe I will tune up my banjo (that will take half the day) and try again to get those fingers to roll.
