Was there some similar ingredient?

I used to stock up on cough syrup in Canada, in the '70s, cause it had codeine, which really worked well, and there was no problem carrying back over the border then.
They also carried 222's, which were the equivalent of mild Vicodin tablets,had a whole emergency box with stuff like that.
