Worry beads!1 Are they anything?!1

Last edited Fri May 13, 2016, 10:29 AM - Edit history (1)

So starting with a lack of knowledge except the hearsay they're supposed to be an aid to meditation, relaxation, soothe things: The wonderful internet filled in blanks and provided outlets for buying them. Narrowing the criteria, they're supposed to make some noise, are preferred to be of organic materials (over metal/glass/stone?) although increment of information upon increment of information piles up the intimation that just about anything goes with these things -- the way it's handled, whatever, number of beads being odd numbers in groups of four PLUS one. So the filtering of the hundreds/thousands? of available varieties became for me personally: No tassle, certainly not $500 for amber, more like $11 for resin. Although the YouTubes don't seem very meditative, and if somebody is flipping things next to me, say at a meditative Happy Hour, a happy mood might escalate into a punch in the nose.

So these things at Etsy are all colors, materials, numbers of beads, coming from thousands of miles away. *Wait*a minit!!!!1 They look simple enough to home make, so a trip to the NON-Fundie crafts store resulted in nice wooden beads (organic) and "hemp" cord (also organic). Really simple to string and knot. However, the YouTubes don't look relaxing except for the dude who appears to be in his own dream world. Well, my first product was a tad short (the slack of a palm's length needs a little more length). Plus these dudes are mostly not teaching so much as twirling (this is relaxing?).

That said, it sounds like your form of meditation obviates all.

flipping/swinging a chain fob in a taunting way. It takes panache to carry this thing off, more than shrinking-violet-I can muster - not to mention my challenged motor coordination.

I imagine that these fidget beads pre-dated the Catholic rosary? Just can't make the connection to praying with all the swinging and twirling, which would be so irreverent in handling a rosary. Even if Wiki says the worry beads originally linked each bead to a prayer.

Right now I'm using my homemade deal for occupying my left hand during the extended periods of right-hand scrolling while reading stuff online (only since last night). Just my latest minor obsession, probably soon to evaporate.

It's really smooth and has an indentation for the pad of a thumb. Not noisy like worry beads.

9. Haha, so this would remove the flashy extroversion of clacking and swinging the beads!1

But it implies I'm actually drawn to the therapy of it all, while it's the flair of the beads that's intriguing me. For now. My fads fade fast. Apparently I'm a silly, superficial specimen.
