"..the) winter of 1870-1871 was a traumatic time for Parisians, an ordeal that saw the city sustain more damage over just a few months than in any other conflict in history. "
France and Prussia are at war and into its fourth month of siege , Paris is starving. All the dogs, cats, and rats have been eaten and now they turn to the zoo, where the following menu is presented.
Consommé dElephant ? Elephant soup.
Goujons Frits Le Chameau rôti à lAnglaise ? Fried Camel Nuggets
Le Civet de Kangourou ? Kangaroo stew.
Côtes DOurs roties sauce Poivrade ? Bear Chops with Pepper Sauce
Cuissot de Loup, sauce chevreuil ? Haunch of Wolf with Venison Sauce
Le Chat Flanqué de Rats ? Cat flanked by rats.
La Terrine dAntelope aux Truffes ? Antelope terrine with truffles
Oh, and lest we forget the stuffed donkeys head as the hors doeuvre

(56,582 posts)Though some of the animals in the Paris zoo did die (mostly from errant shells) there is no evidence of any of them being eaten.
The siege of Paris was the one time Bismark miscalculated in his whole career, and he miscalculated very badly.
