i think i'm gonna quit going to the movie theaters

i hate going to the movie theater, i hate all the previews for CGI summer crap that go on for 30 minutes. and paying ten bucks for popcorn and soda.

and the CONSTANT reboots and remakes. i can't remember the last good movie i saw.

im thinking of just getting a theater installed in my living room and watching foreign films the rest of my life.

Twenty years ago.

The final straw, for me, after a few years of grumbling about crowds, rising ticket and concession prices, people talking to or over the film and taking/making cell phone calls, came during a Christmas day matinee.

In a nearly empty theater, a group of six decided they just had to sit directly in front of us. One wore a tall hat, another had high piled hair, both interfering with our view, and all had to chatter and babble over the film.

We moved, of course, but that level of rudeness and complete lack of consideration for others had me swearing to never return to a movie theater. And I have not and will not.

Judging from comments made by those I know who do still go to movies, it's only gotten worse, even without factoring in the possibility that some nut might decide he needs to shoot up the place.

I'm quite content now to wait 3 months to see a movie on PPV or six months and catch it on Starz, HBO or Showtime.

The extra 5 or 6 bucks is worth it. I'd rather spend 18 and get my choice of seat and not rub elbows with a stranger than 11 or 12 and take my chances.

in addition to reserved seats, the armrests between seats are a foot wide. Errybody get some armrest. And the seats are leather recliners. And they have a real kitchen and draft beer. The tickets themselves are only a dollar or two more than our regular cheap theater where we catch matinees. The fancy theater is still only for big actiony releases. Marvel, Star Wars, stuff like that.

The last time was Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies." Prior to that, it was "The King's Speech."

I classify theater visits the way I do air travel: things that used to be fun, but are now a colossal pain in the ass.

No way will I pay $12.00 to see an over-hyped film, $7.00 for popcorn, $4.00 for a small box of candy. The fun of going to a movie is long gone. Give me a good book any time. I may be in the minority but I'm not dumb enough to go see some of the garbage offered today. I do regret not going to see "The Martian". The book was great but I was sick at the time. I hope others enjoy a trip to the movies. This old timer gave up years ago.

and not very bright ones, at that.

Once you get hooked on foreign movies and TV shows, the American ones seem like cartoon characters. They have the same genres that we do, but somehow their characters and situations are more nuanced and creative.

I am thankful for the streaming services, which bring me all I can watch of the world's best films and TV shows.

i see commercials for some that I think i'd like but then I forget about it. It costs too much and too many people don't behave. As for the popcorn & soda, I stopped buying that stuff decades ago. I realized that I can watch TV without consuming anything so what's different about the movies?

now it's all cartoons and action heroes and crappy CGI stuff - more and more, they seem to be made for people with very short attention spans who just loves them some very shiny, fast objects - add to that the number of people who apparently cannot go even 90 minutes without checking their handhelds - UGH

Other alternatives are repertory and community cinemas, rare though those are, and possibly museum-, library- or university-based theaters, especially those that show vintage films.

My husband bought a big flat screen TV and we rent disks from Netflix or we stream movies from Amazon and I'm not sure where else.

You do wait a bit longer for the famous, must-see stuff, but we no longer care about that!

We love watching movies in our living room with our snacks, and the ability to run parts of the show back if we missed something.

It's great!

It too has reclining (pl)eather seat with big armrests & free refills on drink. It's more expensive but it does keep the riff-raff far & away from me.

Bigger seats means less people in the theater. The more I go to it the more harder it becomes to accept lower grade or "common" movie theaters. Yah for upscale!

We care for very few action/superhero stuff. And most of the dramas, thrillers and comedies we like, there seems to be a lot of whispering, low talking, or foreign accents. Additionally I had to start taking caradopa/levdopa for Dystonia, so I'll fall asleep at the drop of a hat, particularly in a dark room. So we get our movies from Redbox or Stream on Amazon or Netflix. Just so much better with close captions, bathroom, and for me nap breaks, replays and not dealing with rude people with texting and talking.

First time in nearly 6 years. Last time was for the 50th anniversary showing of West Side Story.

Tonight my local theater has a special showing of a film about PTSD and veteran suicides, with the filmmakers participating in a discussion afterward.

Call me crazy, but I miss popcorn with real movie theater butter.

The sensory overload previews for inane crap I never want to see.

Crowds.

"It's all crap now". The bigger the hype: The more it sucks.

LOUD soundtracks on today's movies. I have to strain to hear the dialogue unless they're shouting. At home I'm continually adjusting the volume up/down to turn down loud crescendos of sound effects/music ( lest the roof of my house blows off ) or raise it high to hear what is being said and at least at home I can rewind to hear what I've missed.
