In the 1920s, painter and eccentric Waldo Pierce, gave a turtle to the concierge where he lived. She was delighted with the new pet but did not notice when Pierce secretly replaced it with a larger turtle. This continued for some time, each time a slightly larger turtle. Then after a while, he began using smaller turtles.
