I just saw "The Witch" (no spoilers)

It has a 91% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it sucks! I'm sorry, I'm not young and hip anymore, but when I sit down to watch a "horror" movie, I expect to see SOME shit actually happen! Maybe if I'd seen it in a theater, I would have had a different view, but I seriously doubt it

And the sound was AWFUL! If anybody else here has seen it, let me know if you noticed that.

I thought the acting was very good, and as a historical period piece the did VERY well with the scenery, dialogue and costumes - but the story, *meh*

What I liked about it:
Successfully evoked a sense of profound isolation
Generally effective atmosphere
Nicely creepy in some parts
Really played up the "completely out of their depth" angle as it pertained to nature overall
Captured the family's vulnerability and helplessness in the face of uncaring nature
Solid performances, especially from the twins

What I felt was lacking:
Pacing was rather slow
No real payoff. At least, none to match the implied arc of the story
Some of the father's dialogue was simply unintelligible

I don't regret seeing it, but it wasn't great. I'd probably watch it again if hit showed up on Netflix.

better than some of the crap out there, but definitely strange, somewhat incoherent.

Twenty million jump scare cliches (including them literally using a black cat jump scare) later, I questioned why such a crappy film was praised. I suspect the one you watched is probably the same dilemma.

outre movies, especially horror. I also had mixed feelings after I saw it. I thought that the trailer
somewhat misrepresented the actual content of the film. It was well directed, well acted, lot's of atmosphere,
not insulting to the intelligence.....I just thought that story line could have been more lively and much more tightly constructed.
I would give it a B-
