The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI ran a red light tonight.
When I came up to the light it was yellow, and it's in my neighborhood and I'm familiar with it, so I knew it was going to turn red before I got through it. So why did I run it? It was because of the idiots behind me. I looked in my rear view mirror and they were speeding, if I had stopped I would have been rear ended in a major way, like car totaled, whiplashed way. They also went through the red light. After that light, we're in a 30 mph neighborhood zone, and they were still on my back bumper, particularly when I turned onto my street.
My spouse had hip replacement surgery this past Tuesday, so the last thing we needed was a totaled car, and me being injured. WTF is wrong our society?

(31,386 posts)I was sitting at a left turn arrow only light not long ago and watched one car blow through the yellow--turned red while in the intersection--
and then TWO more whiz through the RED light.
Many years ago in Los Angeles I was rear-ended 3 times in 4 years and every time at a stop light. All different circumstances.
But it got so I hated to stop at a light and it became a habit to check the mirror to see if someone was on my tail whenever
I approached a stop light.
People are idiots.
How is the recovery going for the hip replacement? I had one--coming up 9 years ago--and was up the next day walking on it and off
the cane within 3 weeks. Tell your spouse to DO THE EXERCISES!
Good luck!

(4,460 posts)He's about to ditch the walker and go to a cane. PT has been coming to the house, but he'll start going outpatient next week. He went to the ortho today, stitches come out next Tuesday, and he's approved to start driving short distances. His dad had one done 2 decades ago....as they say, it's not your father's hip replacement surgery.

(4,460 posts)I was in the left lane, planning to turn left at the next light which is about 30 yards up. Fortunately, that light was green but the assholes continued to ride my bumper even though I was going a little over the speed limit.

(23,975 posts)...expect that AT LEAST 3 cars will run the red light after the arrow has turned green for me. I trust no one on the road.

(4,460 posts)I would've stopped if I didn't fear having my car totaled or being injured, but the car behind me was coming on fast. Fortunately, the light wasn't at a major intersection, just for letting cars exit from a mostly abandoned shopping center. My point was people are assholes these days, sometimes forcing others into committing illegal acts because they fear injury if they don't.

(6,280 posts).... years ago, I took a one day safety course, and the instructor said the same thing you did. Do not hit your brakes, and do not speed up. Just start slowing down. Easiest way to get someone off your ass, and has worked for me numerous times.
