Anyone ever get a dental implant tooth???

D*mn, mine is a upper left 1st molar which was extracted in November, and Wednesday got the base of the implant put in. Ugh.......what a nightmare. I'm swollen and kinda in pain. They said it could be up to 4 - 5 days before the swelling goes down, and I am weening myself the pain pills, only have taken one dose so far. I'm just worried about the swelling. Oh, they also did some bone grafting, and I'm on a pill for infection which I have to take 2 pills a day for 10 days. The dentist office called today for a check up and I did say I was swollen and that the pain wasn't to terribly bad. She said she'd make a note of what I said and to be sure to call back if I have ANY problems........just curious if anyone else has had implants??

He had lots of swelling but same as you not a huge amount of pain. Cold packs helped a lot with the swelling and what pain he had. His periodontist gave him a small, maybe 3" x 3", cold pack pad to use against his cheek.

You can make your own cold packs - one part rubbing alcohol to three parts water. Double bag in ziplock type bags and freeze. This cold pack mix will stay flexible and stay cold a very long time. Wrap in a wash cloth or towel when it first comes out of the freezer.

But mine were both lower, not upper. I've had mine for a bunch of years- gosh must be 11 or 12 years.

Too long ago to remember the recovery. I'll just say that I don't have any issues with them.

It'll get better.

The worst part was the extraction. It came out in four parts. (Hey kids, don't grind your teeth.)

The implant went better that expected. Only one pain pill the night after, then no other was needed. They showed me on an X-ray for the minimal bone growth limit needed for it to work. My bone grew way beyond that. The dentist was very proud.

My only problem has been the crown. It has come out twice. I asked for stronger glue, but they said they need to get in there in case there was a problem with the post. After the first time it as glued back on, I only chewed mush on that side. Months later, it came off again. Since I'm unemployed, it'll have to wait for a re-glue.

my 1st molar, (it's the first permanent tooth kids get at 6 or 7 years of age), had to be extracted. I cried for days. I'm thinking now, that wasn't even the worst of what could happen. At least I got some great advise here to help me out. Good luck to you and hope your crown can get re-cemented sooner then later.

Three of them are anchoring extensive bridgework (because of a car accident I had). The swelling goes down, the pain subsides. Finish your antibiotics and everything will be just fine.

so posting here to keep track of replies. Glad to see so many with no problems after the initial pain. I think I can I think I can...

If it's not prying too much is a there a ballpark figure for the cost of these things? does it depend which tooth?

lol I could probably replace all my teeth and be better off...except that would probably be a big dose of cash.

for these implants than just spend money on dentures or bridges. I'm sure my overly crooked and holey teeth will end up costing me extra but, like a Kennedy said, worth it..

fwiw, I was told by hygienist and tech that a three tooth bridge usually results in the loss of the 2 anchor teeth because it's *very* difficult to floss those teeth once the bridge is in.

thankfully the issue she had was the actual tooth when they placed it upon the implanted stem.
She kept telling them the size want correct.
Sure it is.
NO its not.
How can you tell?
Its my mouth, I know. It doesn't feel right
AND when the tooth completely popped out, they believed her.
AND had to redo, with the right size tooth
at their expense

Watch for infection, though...if you get a fever or feel light headed...go to the doctor...very dangerous.

for an upper tooth (#13 in dentist lingo) that was close enough to the front that it was noticeable it was missing if I smiled.

I didn't have much pain from it. I also had to take antibiotics because I have a hip replacement and anytime I have any dental work
I take prophylactic antibiotics because if an infection were to take hold in the hip replacement area, it's an ordeal to clean it out and sometimes
you have to have the replacement replaced...and it's not as easy the second time around. So don't worry about the antibiotics.

Get off your pain pills as soon as you can. I rarely take them if I can handle being uncomfortable. The swelling will go down.

In my case, there is a little more space between the implant and the adjacent tooth than there was originally. I continuously get food
caught in there, which has forced me to floss more often...so while I'm at it, I floss other teeth that used to get a lot of plaque. Kind of
a secondary benefit.

I have three (because of an car accident years ago). Also needed bone grafting. I'm surprised they did bone grafting and implant at the same time for you? Mine were two separate visits several months apart to allow the bone graft to heal and take but maybe this was because I needed more bone grafting than you since the implants are covering an area to support five missing teeth. With so much work in one area (graft and implant at the same time) the swelling is no surprise -- keep an eye on it though. Anyway, love my implants and very happy with them.

on a couple of x-rays they took. But, once they got in there I guess there was a hole so grafting was then done. He said because the x-ray was only 2 dimensional and not 3 they couldn't see it totally. Yah, still pretty swollen, 3 days now. Only taking pain pills in the morning, and that's it.

Had the implants and grafts done in Costa Rica, the crowns done later in Cancun Mexico.

Total cost estimate from local US dentist: somewhere in the $20 k range. Total cost for procedures done by American trained and certified dentists in brand new clinics in CR and Mexico? Just over $6k.

Do the math. That's a saving of $14 K. The work and the clinic facilities were top flight. I'd recomment it to anyone. US dental costs are insane, and cost prohibitive for many people.
