How many here bike commute?

I just thought I'd ask because I recently started bike commuting because the drive - no matter the route or mode of transportation involved - is an hour. Which is maddening because the distance is only a paltry 8 + miles - yet it takes for ever!!! If I'm going to have to spend that time commuting, I may as well get some exercise in the process.

So, who else bike commutes besides myself?

Thanks in advance.

I have been commuting to work via bike for about 5 years. I only go 11 miles around trip though. I hope you plan to wear a brain bucket.

Peace

I travel a lot around my state for work. Biking and public transportation probably wouldn't work for me.
I wouldn't be against it if my commute or work travels were closer, but they are not.

I go about 12.5 miles each way, and it takes about the same amount of time as the bus (or a little less). By all means, wear a helmet and have lights front and back.

For those contemplating bicycle commuting instead of driving, the way I did it was to set a simple goal of averaging one ride a week for half a year, and increase that to two rides a week for the second half. It was easily achievable, even in rainy Oregon, and this goal means that you cut out 30% of your driving miles and gasoline. Yeah, health benefits, smaller carbon footprint, yadda yadda, but what would your budget for gas look like if it was trimmed by 30%?

In fact, I'm a bit obsessed with riding everywhere I go now. You'd think the rides would tire me out but I feel energized afterward and less hungry.

I do wear a helmet. LOL! And love it when I beat the bus home.

Once I developed the habit, I started looking for opportunities to ride: Quick trip to the store, church on Sunday morning, going to visit friends.

I've thought if I get a new bike then biking to my brother's place - which is two miles from my home. Two problems though. There's a major highway between us so I would have to go on that for about 1/4 mile. But that would still be safer than the road he lives on, which is a winding two lane road with no shoulders and traffic that goes pretty damn fast. I've asked the county if they could look into putting in a bike/hiking trail but never heard back from them.

I had about 2 months where it was too icy and I drove, but the cold by itself didn't phase me - I headed out in 12 degree F weather, in the dark for the hour ride, and I was fine. I have a good headlight, taillight, reflectors, a headlamp on my helmet too, and a reflective vest, along with a facemask and ski goggles. It makes me feel hardcore, especially for a woman in my 50s.

is that now my skinny jeans are tight through the thighs.
Stupid muscles!

But ... my situation has changed since I voted in the poll - because today as of 12 noon, I am retired! I'm hoping to keep the bike mileage up though, even without a mandatory commute. We'll see how it goes.

and then I moved so I'm too far away with my other workout commitments.

I would like to be able to get to the point of biking to some of my workouts, but as I just hit the end of my rehab, I'm pushing pretty hard in terms of what my knee is able to endure already. But by the end of the summer I hope to be biking to at least two workouts a week.

I work from home so I walk about 100 feet from bedroom to kitchen then back to my office in the AM.

I went from one extreme to the other. I used to have a 75 mile commute each way that took about 1.25 hours in each direction. It was only supposed to be for two years but it stretched into almost nine years. That was so nice to have 12 extra hours in my weeks after that finally came to an end and I went on to a work from home assignment.

I get a cup of coffee in the kitchen, then I go out into the half of the garage that's my converted computer room and workbench. Every now and then i go back to the kitchen for more coffee.
