I remember you had to wait for the loud beeping 'off the hook' sound to go away before you could enjoy your peaceful silence.

Boy, you weren't rooted to one place any more.
You could walk all over the room while on the phone.

and we had a coiled 15 foot cord
which got tangled up a lot and you had to drop the receiver and let it spin around to untangle itself.

that (back in the early '60s when I was in high school) I could take the receiver from the kitchen phone, stuff myself in the broom closet and close the door, and then I could talk to my friends somewhat privately.
