Or sometimes we'd get a whole coconut - or a pomegranate. We thought it was fun - guess we learned by that to not be afraid of trying new foods. 
I enjoy pineapples when you can get a good one and sometimes that is difficult, but they are always great! I have since bought a pomegranate myself, but I don't remember how they handled coconuts. I think that job was left up to my Dad... 
A slice, served on a lettuce leaf, with a scoop of cottage cheese on top. That was dessert. 
When I was really little, I had a lot of Golden Books. My aunt used to get me one every week when we went grocery shopping. I remember one that was a kind of cookbook for kids, featured the Campbell's Soup kids, I think, LOL. The only "recipe" I remember was something like that - a pineapple ring with half a banana placed in the pineapple hole and a cherry on top. Not exactly "cooking," but I thought it was...
