Deathstroke Will Be Main Villain in Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie

Ben Affleck wasn’t just teasing: Deathstroke will, in fact, be the main antagonist of the Batman standalone movie he’s directing, TheWrap has exclusively learned from an individual with knowledge of the situation.

Earlier this morning, the actor who plays the Dark Knight posted a cryptic tweet of the new villain walking toward the camera in very cinematic fashion, which sent fanboys into a frenzy of speculation.

Deathstroke was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. He is a mercenary and assassin who first appeared in “The New Teen Titans” #2 back in 1980. Wizard magazine rated him the 24th greatest villain of all time.

Also, in 2009, Deathstroke was ranked as IGN’s 32nd greatest comic book villain of all time. Deathstroke, or commonly referred to as Deathstroke the Terminator or simply Slade, is known to be the greatest assassin in all of DC Comics. He has encountered Batman on several occasions in the comics.

Batman has one of the best villains of all the comics & they choose Slade? Cool but not expected. Trying to move away from goofy guys like Riddler or Mr. freeze or avoid Joker/Catwoman burnout I'm thinking.

Guess between the DCU & all the cartoons over the decades BM needs "fresh blood" so to speak. Slade could be a step in that direction. Now they need to "hype" Slade up to generate some heat for those not familiar to him. Maybe he needs to show up somewhere else...

I'm really digging the grittier, grimmer world of the DC movies these days. While I enjoy watching the Avengers franchise on a level of visceral, gee-whiz, flash-bang, no-need-to-think, BvS is something I can sit down with for an evening and really invest into, finding myself into a darker world, and giving me the opportunity to chew on character development.

If I want to see a grim and depressing movie about a vigilante's antics, I'll just rewatch Taxi Driver, for crying out loud.

Batman vs Superman was the worst piece of crap film I have seen in years. It is the perfect example of "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". It has turned me off from seeing any future movies about costumed superheroes.

I think Henry Cavill is one of the worst goddam actors on the face of the Earth. Even Brandon Routh was somewhat competent. And what did we ever do to deserve a whiny Superman who has a receding hairline and a dark, dingy suit that looks like it needs to be dry cleaned?

The whole cinematic DC universe pretty much sucks. They make the Marvel actors look like the Royal Shakespeare Company.

They are desperately attempting to match the MCU & going "darker" at the same time. It works fine for Batman, but Superman, not so much.

I want the DCCU to be successful. In a fight between both universes, we are the ultimate winners.

Think about it: With the exception of the Red franchise (which they REALLY need to get cracking on the third one) the only DC movies that haven't sucked hard enough to lift a cannonball are Batman films - and the atrocity that is Batman v Superman sure as hell didn't help. The MCU has one massive advantage: it belongs to Disney. When they bought Marvel, everyone thought Disney was going to fuck it up...that didn't happen. Really good Marvel movies happened.

The sick thing is, DC has strong characters. There's no reason in the world why they can't turn those strong characters into strong movies. It just, except for Batman, hasn't happened.

Having been a Batman fan since toddlerhood, it has absolutely pained me to see how they have morphed that character over the years from the brilliant "Darknight Detective" to no more than a dumb, high-tech thug. This has apparently been a marketing-driven decision to appeal to as many of the lowest common denominator as possible: angry people who don't read very much or very well.
