Gunpowder Day ocuses on the plot by Guy Fawkes and other conspirators to blow up Britains parliament in 1605. Rebelling against the persecution of Catholics by King James I, they planned to kill the monarch during his visit to parliament. But the scheme was foiled and the traitors executed. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/gunpowder-day/Love Your Red Hair Day Red hair has truly had its share of myths associated with it, but well begin with a few of the most common. Red hair, while common to Ireland, is not native to Ireland. You can generally assure that if youve seen an Irish redhead, shes got some Norwegian blood in her. Red hair, you see, was brought to Ireland by the pillaging and rapacious Vikings. As they moved in, they left the fire in their hearts in the blood of their wives and slaves, and soon, in the sons and daughters that came from their union. It seems only apt that the same fire that graced their manes should come out in the children, and the attitude to match. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/love-your-red-hair-day/

(53,339 posts)Used it liberally in war and was fucked up by it when I was hit by AK-47 fire.
If it weren't for gunpowder there would not be a horrific number of gun deaths in the U.S...or an NRA.

(53,339 posts)In war it's truly a matter of survival. But back on the block? What the hell?
My nephew was stabbed at a party. Now it's easier to use a gun thanks to our lucicrous gun laws.

(17,193 posts)I have red hair. Well, rather I had red hair, now it's more like a rusty ragmop. I sincerely doubt I have Vikings in my lineage, though: I'd bet the farm we are thralls from way back (this doesn't exclude the possibility of some extra-curricular hanky-panky, of course).
Note that those "pillaging and rapacious (sic)" Vikings frequently settled permanently on both sides of the Irish sea. Since my maternal ancestors come from Strathclyde, I might just have Vikings on both sides of the family.
I am, however, the only one of my generation with red hair. On my mother's side, one lucky male per generation got it. On the paternal, it has not shown up in living memory (except for me, that is). I sometimes regret I've left no children to pass the chromosome along.
When I was a child in the Kennedy years, "Better dead than Red" was something I heard a lot. Later on, I discovered women adore it, so there are compensations.
