(78,249 posts)I never encountered one in my nine years in the islands. And there are about 150 varieties of pineapple, most of which are grown at the Dole Plantation in central O'ahu. Many are tart rather than sweet. I stoutly maintain that one of the tart ones might, in fact, qualify as a pizza topping.

(16,321 posts)A tart pineapple has possibilities.

(14,400 posts)for it's invention too.
You'll see it all over Canada and Australia and it's surprisingly pretty common here in CT as well.

(14,400 posts)We always had that as kids growing up in Canada. Good quality ham and pineapple with a mild tomato sauce actually worked together.

(16,488 posts)Growing up in the 60s. Yep, fried spam and pineapple. I think I liked it, too.

(14,400 posts)They eat Spam by the truckload.

(5,914 posts)That's how much Hawaiians eat. That's no joke.
When prepared properly, Spam is actually pretty damn good. Amazing, even.

(119,347 posts)Wow, that's weird. Who'd have even thought of doing that?
Kali
(55,517 posts)the rest of the family eats it but it makes me gag. other than that it is a good pizza place and their Friday fish fry is good. (hence the slaw)

Peace

(55,517 posts)I like coleslaw with a lot of onion and salt and pepper. I don't even like carrot shreds in it, honestly.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(119,347 posts)But then I hate onions all the time in everything.

(12,132 posts)my MIL would make a special version of whatever she was cooking just for me. No onions in my thanksgiving stuffing, no onions in my spaghetti sauce, no onions in my tater salad etc... Everyone else in the family was all "WTF? why does the new guy get special stuff?" and she basically told them to shut up and eat their onions. I think it was because I was the only one at the time who would side with her in wanting our steaks well-done. MIL was a terrific cook. I wish she had passed a bit of that on to her daughter.
Over time though I've grown to love onions cooked in food but still don't eat them raw. Except on a Chicago dog. For some reason, that just works. And I'll eat steak now anywhere from rare to burnt as long as there's no gristle to get in the way of my chewing. I order filets mid-rare and I'm happy no matter if they over or under cook it a bit.
I don't think I'd like pineapple in coleslaw but I love it on pizza.
hibbing
(10,358 posts)what do YOU put in it?
hibbing
(10,358 posts)I go against the grain a bit. Cabbage, a smidgen of grated carrots and I go with a vinaigrette dressing instead of the creamy stuff.
Peace

Classic coleslaw dressing includes mayo, sugar, celery seed, and vinegar. Swap out the sugar and dice up a bit of pineapple in its place. Interesting idea.
Kali
(55,517 posts)yuck!
KamaAina
(78,249 posts)That is not mandatory. Some barbecue joints in Oakland make it with vinegar instead. That version is actually edible.
Kali
(55,517 posts)but for the mayo version for fucks sake don't put too much! - just enough to lightly dress. thick and "creamy" slaw is disgusting.
I have a good Mexican slaw recipe that is vinegar based.

(22,239 posts)Hell, I'd try pineapple and pinto beans if they were placed before me.
Kali
(55,517 posts)but other than pineapple upside down cake I don't want it mixed with other food. and I didn't even like that until I was an adult. LOL

(9,527 posts)but then again I don't eat either, so they would be lumped together to get out of the way.

(2,976 posts)You just read it on the internet, so it must be true.
meanwhile...
I put a can of crushed pineapple in my sweet potatoes and cover them up with cinnamon baked at 350 for 30 minutes. Yummy!!
Kali
(55,517 posts)I have recently been experimenting with "bake-frying" them - cut as french fries and lightly coating with oil, but the kicker is using spicy cajun seasoning instead of salt. haven't got the crisp part down very well but they are pretty tasty anyway.
westerebus
(2,976 posts)Coupled with baked sriracha chicken and mixed greens with vinegar.
You get your hot, your sour, and your sweet. Or...
Baked breaded fish fillets topped with extra spicy black bean-corn salsa with roasted brussels sprouts and the sweet potatoes.
Codeine
(25,586 posts)and then just before serving toss them in butter (well, margarine for me) mixed with yellow miso and a little mild chili powder. The salty umami flavor of the miso balances the sweetness and really makes sweet potatoes a star dish.

(55,517 posts)I think it was just grated carrots and raisins. I have no idea what kind of dressing was on it because I NEVER ate it.

(5,435 posts)along with the raisins... the dressing involved a mayo base, and i wish i could remember what all went into it.

(8,837 posts)after having lived in TX our whole lives, we were quite taken aback when the bar-be-que place we found put coleslaw on our bar-be-que sandwiches! Yuck!
