My beloved cat Patches died last night.

I first found Patches outside my grandmother's house a few days after we buried my grandfather in 2007 and for 9 and a half years she gave me great joy. She was top cat among five but was loving and sweet. Her meows sounded like she was saying me all the time and she loved to give kisses. She loved people and was loved by all who knew her.

Her death was sudden and quick. In a matter of hours she went downhill and at 1:30 in the morning died peacefully in my arms. I am so heartbroken over this and I thought I still had several more years before this would happen.

When you lose a pet you lose a part of yourself. My family has been very kind and been coming over to keep me company but it still is a shock and I feel lost without my sweet Patches.

It is so hard and painful to say goodbye.

When my little Bowie passed away it made me feel better to journal all the things I loved about her and some highlight times we'd had, as a keepsake. It made me smile through the tears as I sat and thought of these things.

I am cleaning the house to try to keep busy. I have 4 other cats and they are aging so I know the next few years will be about cherishing every moment with them but there will be more heartache.

In the end the love a pet gives you is always worth it to have them.
