Just bought my husband a Sonos speaker for his Christmas present......

We plugged it in and are now listening to one of our favorite genre, smooth jazz......and I know lots here HATE it. Not us....we love it.

Aside from pairing and playing from my assorted devices it is a phone speaker, an FM radio, a power bank, a camera timer, plus it has a SD slot from which I can either record audio or play mp3s. The sound quality isn't anywhere near Sonos but it'll do for my needs. It's cute too!

I figure most people could use one somewhere. The age range for this gift exchange varies but I think this is pretty safe.

Yours sounds a lot more versatile.

In my day a speaker was just a speaker, and you needed two for stereo (or 4 for quad, as when I put a quad 8-track in my car).

Decades ago I had the full array of audio stuff. A lot of troops in Vietnam set everything up in their hooches or barracks. I ordered from the Army PX and had everything shipped home. Tuner/amp, reel-to-reel recorder, high-end turntable, 4 speakers in wooden cabinets.

Eventually a channel went out in both the R-to-R and the tuner/amp and there were no replacement parts to repair them. I ended up selling everything to a shop in Oregon for 60 bucks. Which was not bad, after a couple decades of use. I think I still have my original PX receipt for about $650 for the whole shebang in 1970.

These days I do fine with a compact stereo/CD changer in my home and car.

Sixteen years ago my brother bought a Ford model car with a SERIOUS audio system. The car was billed as a Sony exclusive, with yuge speakers in the trunk. This meant nothing to my brother, who bought the car only on a year-end bargain when the dealer was clearing the lot to make room for newer models. Though the car did make my nephew's eyes light up and I'm sure he annoyed a lot of people when he was driving his dad's car.
