I thought Coco was having a stroke, she was panting heavily and kept falling down, couldn't walk straight. Turns out it was an inner ear infection. $185. Damn.
Thankfully, she will be okay. I thought my heart would break watching her.
Gee, I haven't been up this late since 2006.
Other good news: I found out today that my grandbaby is going to be a girl - due next May. My son is worrying because he thinks it's harder being a girl in this society. I don't necessarily agree, but it's sweet he's already taking care of her in his head.
'nite all.

(12,251 posts)her symptoms were from an ear infection that can be cured. Too bad it cost so much, but it's great she's going to be okay. (I have ear-related vertigo a lot, so I know what it's like to stagger and fall down. I don't think I pant, but maybe I do. )
Congrats on your granddaughter to be. I have a great-granddaughter due in January. woohoo!

(6,012 posts)I've had vertigo- it's really weird not being able to walk in a straight line. What kind of dog is she?
It's exciting about your grandbaby, is she your first?
lillypaddle
(9,606 posts)probably about 9 years old. She's probably a lab-corgi mix. The exact coloring of a chocolate lab with golden eyes, but very short body, kind of long.
Yes, very exciting about my first grandbaby. My kid is 43, so he took his sweet time!

(22,448 posts)Took the pooch into our regular vet, where they
failed to diagnose his problem (swollen face,
not eating...duh). They ran a bunch of tests.
They gave us some pain killers
and sent us home. ($200.00)
Later that night, the abscess burst and he started
bleeding. We took him into the emergency vet, where
they had to knock him out to look at the tooth.
After six (6) hours of waiting...After watching sobbing
pet owner after sobbing pet owner walk out with their
little plaster footprint mementos....we brought Sprocket
home with a shit-ton of medications and orders to
"follow-up" with our regular vet in the morning. ($350.00)
Next morning, back to the regular vet to arrange extraction
of the tooth. They also knock him out, and when we pick him
up at the end of the day, tell me that the tooth didn't need
to come out. So basically, the again did nothing.
Okay.
Get to the checkout counter, $200 !
WTF!!! If they had caught the abscess, I would never
have had to visit the emergency vet!
I argued with him for about 10 minutes, after which,
he realized he was going to lose a client with two
dogs and gave me a $100 credit for future treatments.
Which I took.

(9,606 posts)my other dog, Sally, broke her toe not too long ago and they did an x-ray without even consulting me. $125. I complained and they gave me the x-ray money back. Complaining can work. But it's hard when you're upset because your baby is hurt or sick.

(22,448 posts)then when I'm looking at an estimate for doggy surgery.
This same dog became ill and close to death last month.
We took him into the vet and the x-rays showed a tumor
on his spleen had ruptured and he almost bled to death.
Cost of operation? $1500...and there was a greater than
50% chance of it being malignant, so chemo after that....
The dog is almost 11 years old and has hip problems!
We left him in overnight because he wasn't even stable
enough to DO the operation. In the morning, we called
the vet and told him that we had decided to have him
put down.
Vet said "Funny thing, he stabilized overnight, he's
holding his own, and Sprocket told me he doesn't want to die today!"
So we picked him up and brought him home.
That was 41 days ago.
His tumor is still there, and we have had one relapse,
which he recovered from.
He's a "ticking time bomb", but every morning, I am
outrageously happy to see his crazy corgi ears at the
foot of the bed, barking and whining for his breakfast.
Cost of "stabilizing": $550 (minus the $100 credit from the
abscess fiasco).
Did I mention that we can't afford a used car for my
youngest daughter?

(17,433 posts)I spent that much on Cleo last month to fix a split dew claw. For the second time in two years.
