What comes around: The homeless clinic where I used to work is closing.
They're already referring their patients (who used to be my patients) over to our new homeless clinic.
First they refused to renew our contract to provide medical care for their clients. Then they had trouble keeping a medical provider of their own on hire. Every time I called over to catch up, someone had left, and they were frantically trying to find a replacement. Then they decided to expand their patient base beyond the homeless community. That's all right, I suppose; everyone needs medical care. But the whole point of the clinic was to offer a place specifically for homeless patients. A place where they could come and know they would be treated with respect and compassion. So that didn't work out, either.
While things are a little slow here right now, I expect them to pick up soon. In a few months, we will be opening a second clinic for the homeless a little closer to the downtown area. That facility will have showers and laundry service, too, which this one doesn't.
Now, if the municiple organization that ran the facility had just renewed our contract two years ago, none of that might have happened. But it all works out for the best, I suppose.
