This is what I ate tonight for New Year's Eve, with a little sake, not champagne:

And thanks for the reminder. I plan on staying in, feasting on assorted meats and cheeses and good bread and tortilla chips and dips and a cheap screw-top cabernet I found that's very good for the price. Now I see what I'm missing is seafood. I'm adding smoked salmon, shrimp and cocktail sauce to my list.

This afternoon I had to stay home to be there for a delivery of a box of live shrimp, a gift. I opened the box, which was full of sawdust or something like it -- a shrimp jumped into the air and I exclaimed my surprise in a loud vulgar way. I put the box outside where it is cold, I can't deal with it. The shrimp will probably all be dead by morning. Don't tell Greenpeace. I feel bad, but I will eat them. Steamed or fried. I begin the new year with murder. But they are delicious.

I have an Australian Wolf Bass Yellow Label Sparkling Brut in the fridge, quite the bargain, and I'm sure it's made quickly in huge tanks and nobody's fondling and turning the bottles at just the right time or anything. I like cheap fake champagne. If you can't get quality, go for quantity, I always say.
