1. October Sky
When Homer brings his medal from the national science fair to the coal yard to show his dad, who hadn't been supportive of his passion for rocket science. They squabble and Homer turns to walk away and his dad says, "I hear you met your big hero" (Wernher von Braun) and Homer spins around and tells him that von Braun was great and all, but that he's not his hero. Then it shows his dad pondering that for a second before getting in to the lift to go down into the mine and staring out at Homer with tears in his eyes.
Dammit, that gets me every time. And not just a tear either - full waterworks. And the last scene at the rocket launch is a killer too. |

4. I am not sure...if I can find it... But its from the movie Japanese film Nana
Last edited Tue Feb 21, 2017, 05:15 PM - Edit history (1) Here is the song... but not the film.
Yuna Ito was singing this song, and both girls had gone to see them sing, the group Trapnest. One of the Nana's former boyfriends was the lead guitarist. He had left their band to go to a bigger more popular band, Trapnest, which was a huge opportunity for him. In doing so, he left the small town they were in, to go to Tokyo. Nana and the band, went to see him off and she broke down crying as he left, not knowing if she would ever see him again. Later Nana travels to Tokyo, and meets the other Nana on the train, and they end up being roomates. She is a huge fan, of Trapnest not knowing that her room mate had dated the Trapnest member. Both Nana's go to the concert and the first Nana confesses to her about what happened. During this song, Nana breaks down again, crying and the other Nana cries with her holding her hand, a very touching scene. It made me cry my eyes out for hours after seeing it. found it, you can watch it here: http://www.veoh.com/watch/v47196805k2dyQC5X |

5. "Stand By Me"
I grew up with a close group of friends who were like brothers. Tragedy stuck us far too young when a drunk driver crossed over three lanes of traffic to hit one of my friends head on, killing him instantly. We were 20 then, and we're damn near double that age now. We always identified with this movie, because it spoke to us, and there was a time when I could quote damn near every line. We still keep in touch, but not nearly as close as we used to be. I, well, I was Gordy. I was always the one who was a little different. My Chris, my best friend, my brother, the guy who accepted me for me when we were kids and was my constant encourager, the man who is godfather to all my children and I'm godfather to his? He's currently in Afghanistan. Say a prayer for him if you will...since the clip cut off the ending song, it deserves its own highlight: |

26. This movie resonated with so many. It such a wonderful illustration of not only the human condition
but also of the roles we had as children growing up oftentimes based on the group dynamic. I'm so sorry to hear of your friend who was killed in the car crash by a drunk driver (we had one in my group who died under the same circumstances). I will pray for your friend in Afghanistan.

10. "Hey Boo" always gets me going.
Last edited Tue Feb 21, 2017, 08:03 AM - Edit history (2) But then again, by the end of To Kill a Mockingbird I've long been a blubbering mess. But this scene when we first get to see Robert Duvall as Boo Radley is a powerful one. A straight police procedural turns into the most revealing scene in the film. Mary Badham plays the scene so innocently and only adds to the drama. When Peck's Atticus introduces Mr. Arthur Radley to Scout, I can no longer contain the tears. "Miss Jean Louise, Mister Arthur Radley... I believe he already knows you." It is one very powerful, extraordinary scene. Duvall and Badham with nearly wordless, simple facial expression pull it off. |

58. Yes but what happens in the clip is he breaks through it
right at about the 7-minute mark. You can see it happening in his eyes. He sees her as a "human" for the first time and that's when he proposes to her. So the misogyny is part of the plot. Before that moment he's a reflection of his culture, post-WWII ex-military and uber-misogynistic. Dean Martin's character is the embodiment of the world Frank rises above for a few brief days of happiness before the ending which I won't give away.
hint: it's sad. ![]() |

62. She's not Lady Macbeth I'll give you that ...
I think they're both meant to be seen as damaged characters marked for society's trash heap who manage to break through their conditioning and form a family. Ultimately the culture prevails and that's the sad part. It's a 50s melodrama so a lot of the conventions are out of date but once you adjust to that it's pretty good. Personally I think it's the best part Shirley ever played though the critics had a field day with it.

But it's a scene in Peggy Sue Got Married where Kathleen Turner is talking to her grandmother Maureen O'Sullivan (she has gone back in time to when her grandmother was still alive) and tells her grandmother that she had a dream about her that she died and that she named her daughter after her. The musical score is so beautiful too in the background, makes me cry buckets every time.
