How does this truck not flip onto its side? (Original Post)

(86,920 posts)1. Man, that's a bad day at work...
I think the only way it didn't lay over is that the driver managed to crank the steering axle to the right enough to stabilize... and that was a long shot. I've been up on one side like that (catching air all the way down the line) but the box wasn't at that 45 degree pitch. I'd have died of a heart attack if the crash didn't kill me were that me in the driver's seat... any witnesses must have had a rise in blood pressure for a moment.
yikes.

(12,835 posts)2. Wow! Conservation of angular momentum?
Maybe it's the "gyroscopic" effect of all the spinning wheels? Although, could those tires create enough angular momentum to keep the whole truck from further tilting?
I imagine the truck is empty, or has only a low load in there. If the center of gravity were very high up, I'm pretty sure that the truck would've tipped over completely, and probably quickly.

The little car in the left lane was lucky too. If I'd been driving that car, you would've seen me accelerating like crazy to avoid getting crushed!

Smart driver -- he steered into the lean as much as he could, bringing the wheels back under the center of gravity.
