The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust watched the first three episodes of the Handmaid's Tale.
It's obviously been updated for the current decade, and it looks like they're extrapolating and not just sharing Offred's story but also imagining what other characters mentioned in the book may have went through.... but it's GOOD!
I hope people can watch Hulu originals without a subscription. It might be worth the subscription for a few months, though. I'm presuming they released the first three at once, but that we'll get a new one every Wednesday, so with 10 scheduled airings and the free trial maybe people will only have to pay them a month.
But damn... it's worth watching. As long as no one tries to use it as an instruction manual.

(8,000 posts)The first 30 days are free. I've never used anything like this before so I'm anxious to see how it works for me. I'm glad to know that it's so good.

(8,311 posts)But it does seem relevant here, today, especially with the way they're depicting things. Atwood used the "ending lecture" in her book to suggest Gilead borrowed from almost all oppressive religious regimes. And not to be a spoiler, but yeah, the series so far in their "out of the box of the book" thinking has the Gilead depicted doing just that.

(50,949 posts)good because I thought it had ended pretty abruptly.)
I'm liking it and I loved the book so the fact that I'm not disappointed says something.
One thing though: can you explain to me how the guy from Mexico knew that June's husband was still alive and how did he know where to send the note he had June write? How did the guy from Mexico know anything about her husband, who was living in Canada?
