Joaquin Murrieta /Zorro/Batman - Strange ties that bind

Joaquin Murrieta , a notorious bandit who killed for a living, is tracked down - supposedly- and beheaded. His head is preserved in a brandy jar which is later destroyed in the great San Francisco earthquake. Then a down-on-the luck writer stumbles on his story and embellishes it making Joaquin a folk hero by incorporating bits and pieces from The Count of Monte Cristo and The Scarlet Pimpernel, both of which feature wealthy gentlemen who don disguises to fight evil. SUCCESS - 90 short stories featuring ZORRO which in turn inspires the Batman figure - Bruce Waynes parents are killed after leaving the movie The Mark of Zorro.
