Simple Pleasures

I love to read. I don't get a lot of time to do it, but I still manage about a book a week. Nothing is more relaxing for me than to sit in a big over-stuffed chair we have under the clear light of an overhead lamp and read. I work nights, so on my off days while I'm sort of keeping to the same schedule I spend the nights in a simple state of pleasure in my big chair. I don't read much fiction, but I read Siddhartha recently by Herman Hesse and it was marvelous. I've been getting into a lot of Eastern philosophy lately.

I used to look forward to cigarettes and beer, but I gave that up for my health. Then it was rich food and I had to give that up as well for the same reason. Now I just have my wonderful books, and I don't think I'm ever going to have to give that up. They are far better than booze or tobacco or t-bone steaks anyway.

What are your simple pleasures?

2. my simplest pleasure has been

getting rid of all our books........we got rid of 40 some boxes when we left Chicago
in the early 80s, I left about 30 boxes of fishing mags at the Vet hospital in Buffalo, NY. in 90. We then moved 60 boxes to Waconia, MN.
Got rid of almost all of those when we moved, but still had some to leave near Batavia, Ill when we left there to come back to Minneeesoota.

I now use the library and find the best part of library books is the people who work there!!!!!!!!!! They're wonderfully helpful and way underpaid.

3. animals.

my 3 dogs, my 2 dozen chickens, and my 3 parrots, one of which is usually either on my shoulder or looking out the back window, watching the chickens.

most of all my bulldogge. he is the sweetest, most empathetic creature i have ever had the pleasure of sharing my home with.

also being in my garden, although right now that is not a pleasure as there is much work to be done, and my right shoulder is still healing from surgery.
the garden pleasure often contains neighbors who stop by to tell me how much they enjoy it.

all keep my attached to the planet.

4. the fireplace, a good show on the TV, my chair and my cat

5. Looking out of my window

A few months ago I bought a home here in Kansas and there is a creek flowing right through my backyard. I have seen herons fishing, turtles swimming, muskrats nesting, geese raising families, ducks and rabbits running around. Then I can see massive carp swimming around in the shallows in the evening and the occasional bass leaping out of the water. There are hawks flying overhead. Every day I can see cardinals and blue jays, woodpeckers, and red winged blackbirds.

I never get tired of watching the abundant life in and around the creek.
