The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAre "Protest Songs" officially dead?
I posted one here last week regarding justice for Trayvon Martin and it was pretty much ignored here and has gotten a negative reaction on Youtube. I don't have the greatest musical ability in the world but I think the song itself was pretty good and conveyed the general outlook on this case/situation that I read here at DU and am seeing in other protests and such.
Are people just protest songed out?? Or is there some other reason why protest songs are not really accepted anymore?? I notice that no major label artists are out there making protest songs anymore, so it would seem that the concensus is that protest songs are not generally well received for some reason. Hmmmmmmm.

(9,230 posts)Imagine hearing something hundreds of times and doing something about it. So we get all that canned music which I call crap.
Times are harsh and there is plenty of injustice.
It does seem like when you get wealthy and still care you do your own stuff like Phil Collins.
But the corrupt radio stations will not allow it.

(3,827 posts)Steve Earle. It seems like most of the music that he writes has that 60s/Bob Dylan protest feel. He is a very talented artist who was basically shunned by the Country music community for his views. I am kind of glad he didn't turn into one of those zombie-like musicians. Each time I go into a bar with a jukebox there is a good chance that his "Copperhead Road" will be played.
The Trayvon Martin case is a different beast altogether. Did the artist write the material just for fame, or does he actually care about the Trayvon? I personally haven't heard the song. You should post it for us to check out.
Here are a couple of my favorite protest songs:

(15 posts)I didn't do it for the fame or money, in fact I created a new name here and on youtube so it would be completely anonymous. I'm too scared to post something so divisive and have people know who I am, but I wanted to get the message out there. Would be happy for you to check it out! Thanks
Haven't heard Steve Earle but will definitely check him out. I listen to Bob Dylan daily though and that's when the idea first hit me.
