What was with a showing of the Expendables in this movie? I was surprised to see Sylvester Stallone and wondered how that casting came up. Anyone have ideas?

I don't keep up with all the other Marvel superheroes. But I can understand the draw.

However, I think GoTG can stand alone. Great characters.

4. It's a popular Ravager team from the comics.

I'm not really a comic book guy, but that's a team of Ravagers that a lot of people really love.

5. I got the feeling it was just fun casting as a nod to those of us who remember the original GOTG.

6. Spoilers - those were the original Guardians.

Star Hawk, Yondu, Charlie 27, Mainframe, etc were a couple decades out before Star Lord, Nebula, Drax, etc., And they originally were supposed to be around year 3000 or so.
Gunn apparently decided it would make better movie/ continuity sense for them to be in charge of the Ravagers, and set "real time" at around 2014, which is when GotG vol 2 is set.
