Anyone know how to make chicken wire egg baskets?

I want to make one for a rustic centerpiece, but I'm afraid to continue googling because the last time I did a search for "how to make a wire basket" I was directed to a porn site. They cost about $20.00 on up and I need to make them at a fraction.

about what kind of porn site would be found by "chicken wire egg baskets", I mean seriously... what kind of kink would be implied by that specific phrase...

Turns out google showed me no porn sites... just a bunch of DIY sites on making chicken wire baskets.

But I think the pop up was one of those things that would only make it worse if I had followed instructions.

I did all the usual exorcisms and I would like to believe everything is okay now.

We had 50,000 laying hens in free run houses with nest boxes. The baskets were maybe 16" across and about that high, wire coated with some kind of yellow plastic. I don't know what happened to all those baskets-maybe my cousin buried them along with the chicken houses.

Personally I would go with a woven wood basket something like this:

All-Wood Construction
Capacity: 1/2 peck
Height: 6-1/2"
Diameter: 8-1/2"
Finish: Natural
Cost: $10.32 plus S&H

"Chicken wire" is a specific type of wire used to make enclosures for chickens. Egg baskets are often "wire egg baskets" - which are generally NOT made from chicken wire, though some are made from a wire mesh that looks similar to chicken wire.

I searched for "wire egg baskets" and got a lot of useful links and images.

As for making them, I suspect that wire coat hangers would make a good framework and that chicken wire could then be attached to that frame.

The simplest is this one:

A more complex one:

The hands down cutest one:

And those wreath forms come in different sizes, too.

I was thinking - some of the egg baskets that look like they might be made of chicken wire might be collapsable - like some of the produce baskets they used to sell to hang onions and other vegetables from the ceiling.

But the make your own ones would be easiest with chicken wire. A tip on wrapping wire - an old metal bottle opener makes a neat wrap much easier - one like this:

Put the wire to be wrapped through the hole (either end), hook the part that sticks out over the strut you want to wrap the wire around, and just pull the bottle opener around and around until the end is fully wrapped. We used to do that to splice sections of fencing together and it makes a strong, tidy splice. For chicken wire, one of the smaller ones that are sold for key chains might work better so it would pass through the holes in the wire mesh.
