I have a 'Throw Back Thursday' story to share.

Tonight TCM is running the movie that triggered my overwhelming arachnophobia - ‘Tarantula’.

Mom and Dad took me and my brother, Pat, to the drive in. I probably wasn’t much older than 3. It was definitely before my sister, Chris, was born. The first feature was likely a Disney film, and the parents probably figured Pat and I would fall asleep before the 2nd feature started. There were always plenty of pillows and blankets in the back seat, on drive in movie night.

Anyway, we probably DID fall asleep, but then woke up. I have a crystal clear memory of the two of us peering over the front seat, right about the time the GIGANTIC SPIDER was cresting a hilltop. It was bigger than a house, and absolutely terrifying! And from that point on, both of us were plagued with a dread fear of spiders.

I still have it.

...in a 'Mercan Motors Rambler, one o'clock in the morning, watching....Flower Drum Song.

I know it's in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, but I woulda preferred the giant spider movies over FDS.
