I don't know why people just can't be kind to each other.

I have a theory, but I just don't know for sure.

Many people seem to be so worried about someone getting over on them that they allow it to sap them of all compassion. It doesn't bother me that a part of my paycheck goes to help support other people who can't support themselves. That's the compassionate thing to do. And there will come a time in my life when I will probably need that support as well as most other Americans. We all get old dammit, if we're lucky, and some people become disabled before their time.

I've got no problem with helping people out. That's the way it should work in a sane society. This every person for themselves mentality has got to stop.

Oh, but it has to be hard, you know. Idle hands and the devil's workshop and all that. The developed world has it within its power to make life easier for every person on the planet. But we can't have leisure, heaven forbid! We can't have people non-productively enjoying their lives.

I'll tell you what direction this country was headed in before 1980. I have a somewhat rare vintage book from that time by a guy named John Nuelinger called To Leisure. Nuelinger was the father of the leisure movement in America back in the 60s and 70s. There were actually whole departments on college campuses back then dedicated to leisure studies. Nuelinger thought that with the rise of technology and a more enlightened society, Americans would have more time on their hands in the future and would need psychological preparation in how to enjoy themselves. Nuelinger did not foresee the Reagan revolution.

And here we are devolving.

Yep, that desire for leisure is a part of human nature. Tobin S. May 2017 #2

computers would free us up to enjoy life, instead, corporations stole our free time for their enrichment!

Most people want to help out and do their part, but the way most of us work now is insane. And it's all because we can't relax and let each other be free. That requires compassion.

I work anywhere from 53 to 64 hours a week, and I don't really have much of a choice. It's just nuts.
