(27,172 posts)Inside since 1pm today.
Had to go out for a doctor appointment, and it was already 109 at 10am.
I knew that wasn't a good sign.
By the time the appointment was over, and a short grocery run, it was already 114.
Been inside ever since.
As long as the power doesn't go out......
I'm drinking (water) like crazy and praying to my a/c goddess.....

The temp in the pool is 92.
Coventina
(27,172 posts)And, I'm sorry to say, that might actually be more than just a feeling that you're melting.
On edit: I know. People can hardly believe it, but it does actually get too hot to swim here at times like this. You're more likely to get dehydrated and die when the pool gets that warm. You don't realize how much you're sweating.
Lotusflower70
(3,077 posts)I have family and friends there. The heat wears a person out. Good idea to stay inside. Hopefully the a/c stays strong for you.

I've been calling her everyday since this wave hit.
I will continue to do so. She says she's fine. Not going outside for any reason.

(24,041 posts)I pretty much wilt at anything above 82, and will turn on my AC at the slightest hint of humidity, even if the temp is not high.
If I had to choose between central air and having a refrigerator, I would ha[[ily get a ginat ice chest, keep it filled with ice, and shop for food every couple of days. I cannot abide hot and soggy.

(111,339 posts)We'll get triple digit heat until Sunday, when we'll get a 1-2 day break. June is generally the hottest month here. Once the monsoons start, we'll get cool outflow winds if we don't get the storms, themselves.
I live in front of a fan for the whole damned month, making sure I drink at least 3 liters a day of various fluids.

(62,448 posts)78 is 44 degrees cooler than the 122 - man that is some serious cooling!
How many years will an AC last out there? And if you don't mind - how much does it cost to stay - uh - cool? You don't have to answer. Thanks.

(27,172 posts)$200 once.
For people with 4 bedroom homes and 2000+ square feet monthly electric bills can easily top $1000.
on edit: when temps spike like this, government and utilities as that no one set their temps below 78 degrees. 1) The less hard your unit has to work, the less likely it will break down and 2) Less danger of overloading the grid, and causing a major power outage.

(38,445 posts)In 1997 , I was visiting him, and we went out into the desert about 15-25 miles from Yuma, can't remember exact mileage, and it was about this time of year....and it was 94 degrees at about 2pm. A couple of local people..who were there, were commenting how cool it was...(cool I thought)...A couple of days later, it was 112 at about the same time....................NOW....I MUST ADD THIS:::::::
I hear from Bob in January, when it is zero in the upper Midwest, near Chicago where I live....and Bob is nice enough to tell me that it is............about............................68 degrees in Yuma.....
SO....it is the good and the bad......ain't it?

(22,270 posts)We used to use reversed breezeboxes at night to pull the night air through the house. It would get fairly cool in the house.
Of course this was Kentucky, where it cools down at night and the humidity and the temperature are often the same. Sometimes it feels like you are walking into a wall. We call it "air you wear"

(27,172 posts)In fact, our canal system was built by them!!
They lived in the area of Phoenix from about the year 0 to the 15th century, but were at their height from about 800-1300.
Of course, it was a different climate. Still a hot desert, but they got more rain, and temperatures dropped into the 60s at night.
It's our pavement that has radically changed the environment (for the worse).
An extended drought drove them from the area (except a few holdouts along the Gila River) in the 15th century.
It is very common to find sherds of pottery, or even entire villages, when one digs in the Phoenix area. Construction needs to be halted and the site fully excavated and documented before construction can continue. Of course, I suspect many finds are never reported.
My great-Uncle was the City of Phoenix Archaeologist for over 40 years.

(32,748 posts)...and it rarely goes over 90 here. June is mostly rain - almost every day.
By July the rain goes away and we get some hot days, but it usually cools down at night.
Last summer I didn't even put my air conditioner in. Waiting to see if I'll need it this year.
I guess I'm saying this is great compared to you guys out West.
I've just retired and have no plans to move anywhere south.
Our weather is pretty great here, it's just that we don't get a lot of sun.

(54,436 posts)That is 95° F, which is VERY hot for Paris in June.
Because of the attempted bombing in Brussels the day before yesterday, there are cops and paramilitary all over, and they are wearing bullet-proof vests which must make them sweat like pigs and have lousy moods. I hope their mood hold long enough for me to get my ass up to Sprout City this evening, not that the security people will be any less on edge there than they are here.

(54,436 posts)But I walk from office to office, and the train up to Belgium will be air-conditioned, as is the hotel where I'm spending the night. The Métro in Sprout City is not, but it's only 3 métro stops from the Zuidstation to the hotel, which I can handle as long as no one blows it up while I'm on it.

(14,565 posts)Summers were absolutely unbearable. Dry monotonous furnace heat. Miserable beyond description.
I was gone as often as possible during those months. As a sports bettor normally I fared well enough to depart for at least 1-3 months, escaping the heat while refueling for the next football season. But I do remember the agonizing summers when I had to stay for various reasons -- 1988, 1993, 2001. Ghastly. Dry heat my flat ass. I would mostly sample sportsbooks at night while otherwise staying home.
Now I'm in Miami. Give me 90 and humidity any day over that furnace hell. We actually have varied days and nights, with wonderful cloud cover followed by sporadic storms. I can actually play golf in the summer and not feel on the verge of baked death. Yeah, I'm interrupted by showers but it's mostly an enjoyable oddity. I dash toward the clubhouse in my cart and eat a sandwich under the overhang while waiting for the shower to clear. Rarely longer than 20 minutes.
