...I saw a documentary about his self-imposed "exile" in Amsterdam. He was one of those rare artists who perfectly captured life but didn't really seem to enjoy it, or perhaps enjoyed it to the best of his ability while surrounded by multiple demons. Tragic.

I enjoyed his music tremendously, but I think the moment that impressed me most was the transformation of "Let's Get It On" from the studio version to the one that appeared on his live album. The original was a "smooth grooves" classic, but on the live album it was a freight train...he meant BUSINESS.

My two favorite pre-"What's Going On" tracks are "Can I Get A Witness" and "Stubborn Kind of Fellow."

Two of my favorites:

Tragically, they both died very young - she of a brain tumor in her early 20's and he was murdered by his father in his early 40's. He was devastated by her loss. She collapsed in his arms during a performance and became very disillusioned with the industry after that. They were so magical together!
