I had them as a kid, of course, but neither my wife nor I have had them as adults. The difference between us is that, unlike her, I do sometimes have dreams that, although not at all scary, nevertheless have me experiencing situations I don't want to be in.
How about you? And, if you're okay with stating it, what kind of nightmares do you have? Or do you have none at all?

(14,553 posts)I have a recurring nightmare where the elevator I am in suddenly stops and begins to move sideways in the building. In other dreams it also becomes less solid with cardboard walls or even just flimsy curtains.
Within the dream,it is very frightening.

(6,913 posts)The dreams I find most stressful are the 'I'm not adequately prepared' - in my case, I'm in trial, no idea what the case is about and I have the burden of proof. Then there's a recess and I wander away and get lost. Don't have a phone or can't make it work.

(6,133 posts)As I got older one reoccurring dream I had got to the point, while dreaming, walking down the school hall I had that sinking feeling again and looked down. I said out loud, "Oh no I forgot my pants again." And then I woke up.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,877 posts)Occasionally I'm either in a grocery store or at work or some other random situation. It always takes me a while before the self consciousness aspect sets in!
I had a lot of falling dreams when I was little. One where I actually fell out of the top bunk and cut my chin open in the middle of the night.
Then I learned that all I had to do was convince myself to fly if that happened again and ever since, that's what I do. I've had dreams where I can fly as fast as a fighter jet, skimming 3 feet above the roadway.

(257,369 posts)I had dental surgery on election day - started watching the returns and fell asleep on the couch. I woke up at about 3am to see Trump standing there with his whole damn extended family! I keep hoping that this is just a bad dream and that I'm going to wake up...

(16,965 posts)I dream I go back to high school and can't find my classroom, or just realized I've missed a class all semester, and then remember I've already graduated. Also have a lot of moving dreams, new house, apartment, etc. I remember dreaming almost every night.

(28,394 posts)I wander through buildings, towns, etc. trying to get... somewhere? I never get there. Sometimes I have to crawl through narrow openings or passages.
I also have one about the car being stolen quite frequently. I think the theme of these is that I'm stranded! LOL
Oh... another one is having a cell phone (I'm calling for help) but none of the buttons or the signal work.

(33,114 posts)Always around the same time of night. Beings are standing over me. I'm unable to move or scream although I try. Sometimes I'll go months without one then have several over a period of a few weeks.

(14,400 posts)I've been having dreams where I realize that I'd forgotten something like a cell phone or laptop and have to go back and get it. However I'm always being delayed or sidetracked by completely irrelevant events and can never make it back. In my dream I know I have to get it or I'm not going to be able to do something so in my mind it's really important to get it quickly but I never make it back.
Even stranger this has been one of those dreams where if I wake up during the dream I'll get right back into it as soon as I'm asleep again.

(27,075 posts)Seriously, I've rarely experienced nightmares in my lifetime. As I mentioned before in a "dreams" thread, I've had a couple of recurring dreams over the years: one is of me, standing on the ground, witnessing a passenger jet crashing (that's always disturbing), the other is that I'm back in school and I have completely forgotten about one of my courses and it's too late to catch up on the missed exams and assignments.
Otherwise, my dreams are almost always like an extension of my everyday life. Sometimes they take a little bit of an unusual twist but mostly they could have happened to me any day of the week.

(8,138 posts)Very disturbing. Even with horrible sounds.
The situations usually start out differently, but eventually a couple of guys pounce on each other and start wailing away.
Not sure why I would have those. I used to, like almost every American male, have watched a lot of violent movies so maybe that's it. I don't like them anymore. Although they are easier to take with the sound off. The sound effects they use for punching and stuff is ridiculous.

(72,375 posts)My worst nightmares tend to take place in the weeks and months prior to meeting my wife for the first time. I dream about turning left when I should have turned right, showing up too late or too early for something, zigging when I should have zagged, etc. And that's what prevents us from ever meeting or falling in love and marrying. Monsters in the closet are nothing to the horror of that...

(426 posts)....I used to dream fairly regularly that I was driving my car, usually on a very busy highway or freeway, and suddenly I went totally blind! Sometimes my deceased father, who originally taught me how to drive, would appear and guide me to safety. Most of the time I was just driving with no idea who or what was in front of me. I always woke up feeling terrified, but so relieved it was "just a dream".
Man, wouldn't psychs have a field day with that one!?

(7,864 posts)It's strange. Once in a while, I wake up experiencing an emotion (like angry or confused) while I usually don't have any emotions when I first wake. I figure that whatever dream I had just left me feeling one way or another. The last dream I remember was more than a decade ago.
