The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsA an old school and FB friend is pissed at me!
He started a FB thread titled "How stupid does NASCAR think we are?" complaining about a commercial during a race.
I responded "Stupid enough to watch NASCAR!"
He lost his shit big time!

(18,641 posts)But yeah, you're right. I went to a race once. ONCE. That was all.

(27,806 posts)If he's posting about an ad he saw while watching a NASCAR race, and you intimated that people who watch NASCAR are stupid, well, yeah, I kind of get what he's saying.
He was trying to talk about an ad; you trashed his hobby instead.
I'm sure you meant well, but (even though I don't personally like NASCAR), I bet people who do like it have to deal with this kind of stuff all the time. It's car racing, and it actually has a super interesting history going back to rum-running during Prohibition. I don't really see that it's different from liking Formula 1 racing, just different car, different drivers.

(2,050 posts)And yes we do get just kinda irked when it's viewership is equated with a low IQ or a redneck membership card.
But then again this stereotype is usually brought to you by the same folks that call golfers "Athletes".

(13,869 posts)A friend of mine went to a NASCAR race with some of his relatives. He told me he had never seen so many confederate flags and MAGA hats in his life.

(2,050 posts)Back in the fifties, I grew up watching it every chance I got, I've never been to a race.
I get what you mean but it's been around nearly 70 years longer than maga hats have been, the confederate flag thing I can't excuse, but then not one of the pics from my Fathers racing years show a confederate flag anywhere.
That's a regional shame

(13,869 posts)Just pointing out that a liberal is a political oddity at NASCAR events.
I'm from South Carolina so I know a lot of NASCAR fans.

(27,806 posts)I want to see both sides, but it's like when I post something about a football game and instead of agreeing or disagreeing with my take on a bad call, someone chimes in with "I hate football".
Yeah, well I think quilting is super boring, but when my friends post pictures of quilts they've made, I don't respond with, "quilting is stupid"!

I'm a little surprised that most of the respondents on here seem to think that if they don't like something, anybody who does is stupid.

(34,376 posts)dreaded the stretch in the West Virginia mountains where he could only get AM radio. The only 2 stations that came in was some Christian station with some Holy Roller preaching hellfire & damnation & the other would be broadcasting a NASCAR race, lol. The unending droning of those engines & the droning preacher were just too much. He got satellite radio as quickly as possible.

(176 posts)I always figured NASCAR replaced horse racing in popularity because they hadn't figured out how to make a horse spin out going into a turn, hit the guardrail and burst into flames.
