I quit in early spring cos Id seen everything and I needed to devote all my time to working on my house.
Now with fall approaching I feel myself wanting to snuggle up with a good movie or tv binge.
Anything new on Netflix worth signing up for?
Also wondering what other tv/movie viewing options there are out there .... since I really did watch just about everything last winter that had any interest whatsoever.
Ive thought about getting the upgraded version of netflix, but the sending dvds back and forth would be maddening. Lets just say that things tend to get lost in the chaos of a house that is perpetually under construction LOL.
TIA

(10,951 posts)You can try a free month of Acorn and if you like it, the monthly rate is not bad. Although I signed up for a year at an even lower rate cumulatively.

I'm rolling my eyes at Whitechapel right now. It's no Sherlock, but it's entertaining.

(47,537 posts)Best thing about 'em is you can start 'em and if you don't like 'em you can pass on 'em guilt-free 'cause you didn't buy 'em.
And if you feel like going back (which I've done), they're still there. They ain't going nowhere.

(28,394 posts)I am currently watching "Dr. Blake Mysteries" and I've seen many of the ones you mentioned.
"Land Girls" is one of the best series ever made, IMO, as is the wonderful "Foyle's War." Did you see Michael Kitchen in "The Collection" last night?!
"Doc Martin" is an absolute treasure.
May I add to your list, "Shetland" and "Hinterland." I liked both of them, especially Shetland, but neither one has many episodes.

(4,522 posts)We were also watching "The Bletchley Circle" but I think they pulled it off rotation
And thanks for "The Collection" - had never heard of it - will definitely have to check it out.

(28,394 posts)I was so sorry when it ended.
"The Collection" is currently on PBS, Sundays at 10 pm. They have shown two episodes so far.

(297 posts)is an amazing series. I am absolutely hooked on it!
Ironically Amazon posted the entire pilot episode on YouTube for all to watch. There are 3 or 4 seasons.

I started watching this weekend and can't stop! I turn it on as soon as I get home from work. I love it.

(46,301 posts)On first glance, it does look like a kids' program, but a lot of the humor would sail over the rugrats' heads.

(2,301 posts)It's from Australia, and they're planning a movie version to be started soon.
Miss Fisher is a modern woman in 1928, an aristocrat who was bored with flower-arranging and the sons of the privileged upper class, and decided to make herself an exciting life. She becomes a detective and solves murders and other crimes. This series ran for three seasons and is pretty impressive in its dramatization of Kerry Greenwood's books...frank talk about gays and Lesbians, birth control, and what a woman's place in society can be. Plus great scenery, vintage vehicles, and gorgeous clothes! And fun.

(1,427 posts)TONS of great Korean and other foreign feature films. They do a good job with that. And American Horror Story and I'm also going through some old series like the Scott Bacula Star Trek. They also have the Brit Sherlock Holmes and also American Horror Story - on seasons 2 and 4 now.

(15,805 posts)Great show! Binge watched all 10 episodes straight through, chilling, suspenseful, a bit gory, surprising plot twists and a punch in the gut finale.
The story is about a British detective who moves his family to a small town in the Canadian Rockies to become the local sheriff. The arrival of a massive new oil refinery changes everything and puts his family a risk.
I get both Netflix and Amazon, but Amazon is offering a lot more new and original content than Netflix, lots of Syfy, including the classics and campy old B-movies. For a price you can also subscribe to some of the same premium channels found of cable.

(11,562 posts)The title is lost in translation...nothing to do with "Resurrection" as in the biblical sense.
It is a Turkish series with English subtitles. There is so much action you won't even notice after a while.
The show is a dramatized account of the beginning of the Ottoman Empire. Lots of swordplay and horses. A group of over 40 horses that are being bred to be as close as possible to the original breed (extinct) is used.
The nomadic people are Muslims (also rather hybrid between a nomadic traditional background and adoption of Islam)--caught trying to preserve their ways between Mongols and Crusaders. Both menacing fronts are historical, as is the growing corruption within their own communities.
Netflix has 2 seasons with many episodes because the shows 2 hour episodes are broken into 4.
If you like Vikings, you will love this.

(1,752 posts)WeLL I ended up making a $60 contribution to my local pbs and now can stream lots more video for 1 yr - binged on season 1 of "the Durrells in Corfu." What an annoying family! But entertaining.
Still debating whether to get the upgraded Netflix or not. Do they have a streaming option or do you have to futz around with sending DVDs back and forth? I guess there is no fine anymore but does that mean you can just keep it indefinitely - if you like it, or it gets lost?
Orrex
(63,172 posts)Yes, a lot of their original programming is terrific, but the main reason I got Netflix in the first place was to watch films.
At the very least, why don't they offer a vast library or public domain films? It would cost them nothing, after all.

(18,837 posts)Great cast, beautiful locations. It's set in Wyoming but much of it is filmed in New Mexico.

I REALLY hope they make more.
