So, a friend of mine who is required to wear stockings to work is going through about $500 a year. Anyone have the knowledge about how to reduce this cost? Is there some bulk source or subscription or something that would reduce this cost? I've advise they track the cost to have for tax purposes. None the less they're paying like $5 a pair and it's an issue.

(4,483 posts)They must be a special type, or at least have a special purpose, because regular stockings wouldn't be eligible as a business expense for tax purposes.

(16,646 posts)So, she's a college student working her way through college.
She's working at a "breastaurant". Yeah, that mean "Hooters".
Look, the tips are good, the hours are right, and she's "built" for the job.
She was a gymnast and is in great shape.
I wouldn't have advised it but she needs the money, and really, in a way it's working out. She is making good money.
Anywho. It's not just about her, but the whole "industry" is going through stockings quickly. It's anywhere from one pair a week and one a day. It would seem it would be possible to create a system by which they could get them "in bulk" in some way.
Oh, and to answer you real question, just basically stockings, sheer to toe and waist.

(4,483 posts)I figure you've already checked Amazon--they do offer subscriptions for repeated purchases--so I went to ebay, where I found *very* expensive stockings specifically for Hooters. They were like $45/pair. Ouch. I imagine they're made to be long-lasting, but golly. I was hoping to find "buy it now" bulk offerings, but they were all for only two or three pairs at a time, and not that cheap.
I searched the web, and there's a Chinese site where all the pantyhose are crotchless.
Does she shop at Marshalls or TJMaxx? They're not a reliable source because their stock changes so often, but sometimes there are big bargains, and she could stock up.
This is a big problem! It's a shame that the stockings are so integral to the getup. You really have to have nice ones.
I think she ought to try Marshalls, and get out the word to friends and family that she'd like stockings for her birthday!

(32,628 posts)There are wholesalers on E-Bay that might have what you're looking for. The problem with them it that it's hit-or-miss.
You might find the exact thing you need once, but go back later and nobody has it.
Or try the Hanes-L'Eggs main website where they might have bulk-buying options. I know for sure they'll give you discounted shipping for large orders and they have the best selection & sizes.

(7,527 posts)When I was a performer the dancers wore tights instead of hosiery and they might be a little more durable to last longer and stand up to more washings.
If this isn't the right thing, perhaps look into investing in actual tights from a dance store. Though in performance they'd only get worn for two hours a night, the ones I had to wear would stand up to rolling around and climbing on scenery and the stage deck. Most people who were issued tights as part of a costume had 2-3 pair that were rotated/washed every night throughout a 3-month run.
