I've been drawn to stories about the seedy sordidness of American history like Robert R. McCammon's "Matthew Corbett" series and Caleb Carr's "Alienist" books, Scorcese's "Gangs of New York," BBC America's series "Copper," and Cinemax "The Knick."

History explains exactly why we are what we are today.
