Quick story: once while driving back from corporate, I was doing math in my head during traffic. Yeah, I know!
So I find this patterns in 1's
Take any number where all digits are 1.
If you square that number, NOBODY needs a calculator!
Four 1's. The answer is 1234321
Five 1's. The answer is 123454321
If you can count, you can do it!
I'm super psyched and I get home telling her about this cool number thing I figured out!
Her reply: "You are such a geek!"
She isn't wrong!!

Actually, I shouldn't complain--I'm up in one of those "it's-not-on-the-map" towns in northwestern Germany to celebrate the 90th birthday of my mother-in-law. My younger daughter drove up from Frankfurt last night, and I picked up out elder daughter at the Düsseldorf airport this morning when she came in from New York. Then we all drove up here to the official middle of nowhere for the big celebration tomorrow. My wife always likes coming back here for a short spell, as it's the only part of Germany (to her) where people speak without an accent.

(6,106 posts)At my mother's 70th birthday party, she turned to another of my aunts and said "Oh, to be 70 again". I'm 65 now, but whenever I think about how old I am, that memory puts it all into perspective.
