What kind of mattress do you sleep on?

Just over a year ago we replaced our very expensive Tempur-pedic mattress with a slightly less expensive Sterns & Foster hybrid. The Tempur-pedic made me feel like I was sinking in quicksand and my husband complained it was hot. We've owned the S&F mattress for just over a year and the memory foam has craters where we sleep and a hump in the middle. It is unbearable! Anybody have a mattress they'd recommend or recommend avoiding??

1. We bought a latex mattress from IKEA - but it was firm!!

So we bought a memory foam mattress pad, 3" I think and put that on top of that latex mattress and it has been great. Prior to that, we went through inner spring mattresses and a different memory foam mattress. This has by far stayed the most consistent without humps and valleys from body dents. And it's been probably 4 maybe 5 years by now.

We have decided to keep our mattresses to the less expensive side. We've purchased expensive mattesses and less expensive ones and frankly, I don't see a huge difference long term.

I liked the olden days where you could flip your mattress completely over to distribute wear.

2. The absolute firmest I could find

No foam, no pillow top -gimmicks for this hard core hard mattress lover.

Had to get a new one about 10 years ago - was "princess and the pea" at every mattress store within 50 miles. Salespeople kept on and on and on about the virtues of the new and improved "technology". Nope - Finally found the perfect one. Locally made and surprisingly inexpensive. Absolutely love it.

If that is what you like - find the place that makes their own and skip the national brands. The new ones just don't cut it if your back is as messed up like mine. Not a morning backache since - unless I am out of town and on one of those fancy ones that have the nerve to call themselves super firm.

I hate foam with a passion. I haven't been able to find a decent mattress in the Years. I have a mattress from 2002 that sucks but it is still better than the one I bought three years ago for $1,500.

I am so sick of Sammy mattress industry.

8. At the time I looked there were two places in the Milwaukee area

Pewaukee Mattress and Milwaukee Mattress. Both mattresses were nearly identical, but one included free deliver, set up and take away of old old old one that developed a bad sag after 20 years.

Don't know if they are still in biz, but I think there would be other smaller, independent makers around most major metro areas. They hardly advertise for some reason. I wondered if they made them for motels.

They were both in non big box areas with small utilitarian stores with a no nonsense show room. Low overhead for sure.

Good luck. The closest big brand to them was the Serta Extra Firm minus the supposedly fabulous optional "pillow top." Much more expensive, but was going to go with that until I found mine.

3. I got a Tempur-pedic mattress

about nine years ago, and it made my chronic back aches go away.

I recall there being at least three different degrees of softness/hardness to choose from. I think I went with the middle one, but in any case it's plenty firm enough.

It's reasonably comfortable but it is HOT... Foam is an insulator.
I had to put a sheep skin cover on it to get some air flow.
I was surprised that the thickness of the memory foam is only about 4".. the rest is just a filler...
I've stayed in some hotels that had very comfortable mattresses and I'll try them next..

It's firm, but I never get sore spots.

When you figure it what type you like, check Sleepy's clearance section. They discount ones that have too much stock, can have the same mattress at anywhere from 30-75% off. I went into the store and the guy actually rechecked stock and found me one 10% cheaper than I did.

I never knew there was a difference between "memory foam" and "latex foam."

the temperpedic is comfortable enough, but so hot.

At avoiding feeling any pressure points like you can w spring matessses. I'm not sure how it compares to memory foam but it is heavy as heck. No way I could turn it without a load of help. I also love that the edges have no cording, as I always have a foot or arm hanging over the edge and it's nice and soft. The other great thing is that it never shakes- other people and pets can be bouncing on and off and you don't feel a thing!

6. I mistakenly bought a pillow top a few years ago.

I hate it now. My back has new aches. also you cant flip it and it's too deep.

I dread going out to find a new one.

I hate my freaking pillow top. If I wind up in the middle of the thing, when I try to get out in the morning, I feel like I'm trying to come up for air!!! It's hot, too.

Next purchase for me is going to be something firm!

no innersprings so it is soft. It took about a week to sink in the middle. It has relieved my back pain but I have to climb into and out of a cocoon. Oh well.

9. water. warm water. helps my fibromyalgia and joint aches

but I started sleeping on water beds because my arms kept falling asleep and the water bed has no pressure points.

When the fibro came along, I appreciated it for a different reason.

Oh yes when I was pregnant, sleeping on a regular mattress made my hips and shoulders hurt; once I got back home to my water bed I stopped hurting.

13. They make it impossible to shop for a mattress.

Pro for the Tempur-pedic and the hybrid was that you could drop a brick on the bed and I wouldn't notice.
Con: they are very uncomfortable to try to read in bed!!

My husband is wanting a Sleep Number though we have yet to even try one! Does anyone have experience with them? It seems like they would leave a hump in the middle and the air feature would eventually crap out. $$$?

The last couple of nights I've slept on the cheap Ikea mattress in our guest room. It's the best I've slept in years though it's only been 3 nights. I'm thinking maybe of getting one of those perhaps with a feather topper but am wondering how much movement you feel when hubby tosses and turns.

It might be worth it to spend a night at one. I got a room with one once just by accident, but I wasn't impressed.

Hubby's the one leaning towards the SN as he likes a Firm bed. I just want one where I don't sink or roll. He's about 180 lbs. & I'm 96 lbs. so when we had our queen innerspring mattress I tended to roll to his side of the bed.

34. I have a queen sleep number

and hate it. It has two air bladders that have separate controls. The problem is that if one of you prefers a lower (softer) bed the other either sleeps on their back, faces away from the middle or rolls to the middle sinking lower to match the other side. So now we sleep at the same number, thus defeating our desire for two separate settings. And even at the same number, the mattress feel different...i hate this bed. But, at over $3000 for the bed we are stuck for another year or so.

It advertises as firm, has a very nice appearance, but it is lumpy and devoid of any substance. Sometimes it keeps me up at night it's so bad.

One of the things people don't think about when researching what sort of mattress to get is the weight load the mattress was designed for.

We're looking at getting a Ghostbed; it's also a hybrid - which will keep you from rolling to the middle, but it's got built up sides and a thicker base foam so it doesn't "swallow" as much and the edges remain somewhat firm. They've got a latex top, so it stays cooler. They've been in business over 20 years, so they've got a good reputation and a great warranty.
It's also rated better for "larger" people - a Queen or King mattress is tested and "guaranteed" to between 300 - 750 lbs between two sleepers. If it's a single person whose rather "light", it will seem to be hard.

The kids got a king-sized Purple, that's a weird gel composite honeycomb-structured mattresses. Looks sturdy enough, seems to sleep cool; weight rated for 300 - 500 lbs for two sleepers.

If you want any of those mattresses that come mail order or as the mattress only, you need to make sure you've got either a good platform or a good set of box springs for it to go on. Without proper support, even the best mattress will start to sag.
