I think this was a compliment

A young lady gave me a ride the other day to one of my appointments.

Earlier I had put on some Old Spice aftershave.

When I got in the car, she said:

"You smell like my grandfather."

And then:

"He's been dead about ten years."

My dad died five years ago today (went to his grave earlier). When I smell a pipe, cigar or old spice , I immediately think of him. So, I would say that it's a compliment.
