When I start to fall apart, I have the cab or ambulance take me to the county hospital because they're unionized and yes, it makes a huge difference.

I've had union jobs and non union jobs and even a bad union is better than no union.

One of the things I've done that I am so proud of is serving as an Union President and other offices over the years.

In my 56 year worklife, I have been a USW steelworker, a Teamster driver, and 42 years as a member of the IBEW. I have served the IBEW in many local offices, local president, vice president, business manager, local chairman, and executive board member. I have also held other offices at the system council level and being part of a national bargaining committee. I have been retired for six years and still pay my dues.

Unions are a great cause to believe in and have helped ALL workers in the USA. The public needs to see through the propaganda of the 1%. The GOP has people fooled into supporting them when in fact the antiDemocrat voters are the ones that could least afford to vote that way.

Especially here in Colorado there is a rich and rather tragic history. I live in a small town between Denver and Boulder that, at one time, had eleven coal mines. Of course, there was Ludlow...

Pipefitters fitters, helicopter pilots, RR workers, and of course the USW! Why workers would think they are better off taking what these big companies give them instead of negotiating fair wages, safety, vacation and sick time... I will never know! I guess having the media and the politicians against unions helps to spread disinformation and out right lies helps.
Many Democrats continue to sell out unions thinking they will still get their support, because hey, who else can they vote for right? Obama has been a big disappointment on this front and has not given us anywhere near the level of support that he should.

I always saw through the corp. lies. And, yes, Obama has been a disappointment, but I shutter to think what the alternative could have been.

The first step is to organize! I also agree with the poster upthread who talked about getting involved in the internal union politics. Unions are supposed to be worker based and to reflect the needs of the workers themselves and not just the leadership. Always remember that!

From socialist_n_TN, former Boilermaker Shop Steward, former Recording Secretary of the Shipbuilders, member of the AFM for 20 years or so. And I currently work for the Firefighters union! Solidarity Sister!

My nephew just started on his first union job a couple of weeks ago. He said he can't believe the difference in the quality of work and attitude of his fellow workers...SO much better than in his last job, where the management had no qualms about screwing over their workers.
