She was the only model that I painted as well as doing a drawing. The look on her face was priceless.

Was the expression on her face. And the hat just added to that marvelous aloof attitude. She had a high society air of disdain about her that was like hitting the jackpot for me. I think she wanted to create a scene like you see in a play. There’s a little bit of a story in the picture. One you can only guess at. You’re right about the importance of clothes and surroundings. It adds a hell of a lot more to a painting. I think it’s probably why I painted this one.

I don’t know what your reference to mies or Sullivan is.

between the glass towers and the heavily ornamental buildings? If so that’s a hard choice. Although as a science fiction fan the kind of architecture that I Love to see is the kind they show in the last season of Westworld. They filmed it in Shanghai and Bilbao and Valencia in Spain. The architecture is breathtaking. Very futuristic. I find it exciting.

I think I get what you mean about the clothes make to (hu)man.

There’s definitely an aura, an attitude there. And the hat frames it perfectly.

It does have an old style look to it. It reminds me of the 1940s too. Kind of chic looking. Maybe that’s why her pose was so appealing to me. I know that when she put the hat on and turned her face so this pose came up I got very excited about being able to capture it. I drew it and then much later I painted it.

I got a little tickled noticing the echoed raised eyebrow and raised brim on the hat.

My mind is now busy imagining stories to fit this picture.

Paintings that the viewer see as stories are the most successful!
