Advertising artwork I did in 1991 for the pre CGI video games industry

I did a series of sculptures for some video games when they first came out and before CGI was used. This is one of the games called Are We There Yet where my work was featured on the box. It won The Game Package Cover Award for 1991 at Electronic Arts. I sculpted the life size figures of family taking a road trip across the US. The art director who hired me just gave me vague instructions on what he wanted. A clueless dad, a mom who had been mom so long that she couldn’t remember her name, a teenage girl who loathed her parents and a boy who was crazy about video games.

The second photo is how it looked when the photographer took the shot. I’ll post a couple more in other threads.

They used to work for the company I was employed at (Synergistic Software), before starting their own company.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing those figures. Once I set them up in the Cadillac in the photo studio I really liked the way it looked.

Small world! And that was 30 years ago!

We have so many talented people here.

I only worked on Myst and the first ray-tracing algorithms. And lots of failures along the way!

The thing that keeps me coming back to DU is the wonderful members. We’re all an amazing cross section of Americans!

Myst artwork is really beautiful. Did you work on the games themselves?

as a programmer/project manager. When software retail was huge, great package design was essential.

It’s from a game that had all kinds of ways to get killed. Very Medieval!

My inner 12 year old boy (I’m female) had a blast creating the sculptures!

Love this!
We sure liked our triangles, and angles, and little waves back then (a la Memphis design). The color palette!

I worked for an artist who did 3D shadow box art, mostly stacked cut paper, and it's sooooo of the 1990-92 era. I have a piece still.

I had to take all the parts un-assembled and put them together in the studio, so what you see in the shot was what I saw for the first time. The Cadillac belonged to someone who was lending it for the shoot. I was really nervous about putting the figures on the seats because what you don’t see is all the sharp chicken wires and such that I used as a scaffolding on the backs.

When I saw it all put together I was impressed at how good it looked. Everyone was. It was a surprise, in a really nice way.
