“Circe Invidiosa,” which in Latin means “Jealous Circe” by John William Waterhouse, portrays Circe, poisoning the water to turn Scylla, her rival into “a hideous monster.”

Circe is a goddess of magic, or sometimes an enchantress from Greek mythology, and Scylla was a beautiful nymph who gets turned into the monster.

It’s is truly beautiful! It’s amazing too. The artist’s depiction of the water is especially good and adds a pristine realistic quality to the painting. The colors of the water and the draped dress stand out a lot due to the vague dark background that has form, like a forest, but no details. It makes the woman and water stand out more. I love the sparkling quality of the spilled water from top to bottom where it creates bubbles in the pond.

It’s beauty is compelling, pulling the viewer in. Thanks for sharing!
