What are your favorite holiday classics?

I remember seeing Laurel & Hardy's Babes in Toyland (aka March of the Wooden Soldiers) when I was a kid, so I make my kids watch it with me every year.

I'm not a big fan of Christmas, as a holiday, but I do love that movie. And, the original Miracle on 34th St.

It's a Wonderful Life (Potter is so Dick Cheney!)
Christmas Story
Miracle on 34th street

One more obscure one - Christmas memory (Capote) with Geraldine Page

also fond of the old cartoons - Rudolph and Charlie Brown.

And perhaps our very favorite - The Snowman (Raymond Briggs)

I grew up on the East Side of Manhattan and every Thanksgiving Day we would walk through Central Park to the West Side to see the parade. It brings back a lot of fond memories every time I see it.

Christmas Story,
Miracle on 34th ( original)
It's a Wonderful Life

I have to add:

A Christmas Carol ( 1951) Alistair Sims

By the time I was old enough to watch it they had started showing it on television. It left a huge impression on me.

Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl & The Night Visitors 1963 version with Kurt Yaghjian..

It is rare to find it because Menotti did not like that it was taped without him being there. But it is still magic for me.

No other cinematic version of "A Christmas Carol" even comes close, for me. Watch the scene towards the end where Scrooge surprises Bob Cratchett with an increase in salary---Simm goes through about a half-dozen emotions in as many seconds while cackling about Cratchett's confusion. Nobody's ever done the role better.....

I love old films.

I never thought anything could compete with the Sim version of Scrooge, but Stewart is terrific, and the whole movie is great.

It's not just my favorite holiday movie, it's one of my two favorite movies of all time. (The other is Harvey.)

Everything about that movie is brilliant (except maybe Marley's over-acting).

I'm another one who has fond memories of seeing March of the Wooden Soldiers (AKA Babes in Toyland) on TV every single year.

And I'm another fan of A Christmas Story. "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"

And for more dysfunctional family fun, let's not forget The Lion in Winter.

More recent but definitely among my holiday favorites are Kenneth Branagh's A Midwinter's Tale (also known as In the Bleak Midwinter) and Peter's Friends. The first concludes on Christmas Eve, the second on New Year's Eve.

also Remember the Night with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred McMurray. I also love Holiday Affair with Janet Leigh and Robert Mitchum; very cute story. Another couple of great movies for Christmas are Meet Me in St. Louis and Little Women are also good, although not true Christmas movies. Anyone remember the B&W "cartoon" Hardrock, Coco & Joe? I absolutely love this one!
