'Benny & Joon': Tribute to June & The Power of Love

Highlights & the Best of Johnny Depp as 'Sam' including the humorous scene, 'Dance of the Rolls' made famous by Charlie Chaplin in 'The Gold Rush' (1925). 'Benny & June's' tender love story, comedy and performances made it a 'sleeper hit' when released in 1993.

- Benny & Joon is a romantic comedy film about how two eccentric individuals, Sam (Johnny Depp) and Juniper "Joon" (Mary Stuart Masterson), find each other and fall in love. Aidan Quinn also stars as Benny, Joon's brother. The film was directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik.
The film is perhaps best known for Depp's talented physical comedy routines (which are based on memorable silent film comics Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin & Harold Lloyd)..

but then it had both Depp and Aiden Quinn so apart from the actual movie it was real eye candy for me.

I loved Depp's Chaplin.

It was just a charming movie, Mary Stuart Masterson was good too, but it has been so long I cannot say more.

as well as enjoyable. The compelling story, superb cast and original music score impressed me a great deal. A wonderful production and real classic.

Another early Depp work of sensitivity, depth and quality acting is 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?' with young Leo DiCaprio.

From the landscape and architecture I sensed 'Benny & Joon' was set in the Pacific NW, and that area was used in filming.

I adore the poster I had framed years ago!

I saw an interview many years ago of Mickey Mantle. The interviewer asked Mickey what movies were his favorites. Mickey said Eating Gilbert Grape was a movie he had view that really touched him. He said it reminded him of his childhood and made him cry. He got teary eyed talking about it.

Mickey's childhood it's understandable why he was moved by the 'Gilbert Grape' story. I'm sure it did bring him and those who've known hardships and have a heart to tears.

And DiCaprio's 'Arnie' was superb. The film made an impression on me for weeks; I told many folks to see it, 'Bennie & Joon' too.
